I’ve given it a lot of thought and I would like to start focusing on finding a position with a company that will allow me to work remotely majority of the time. I would like to be able to move my family out to a rural area and not have to worry about driving over an hour into the city to go to work everyday. I know their are MSP’s out there that have a business model that employs remote workers but I just don’t know who they are or who is hiring. Anyone have any leads?
What I would be willing to do remotely:
SysAdmin, IT Manager, Front End Web Development, Content Developer, all of the above. I would even consider Tier III helpdesk or Helpdesk manager if the pay is half way decent.

Good luck, I know a few MSP’s and worked for two. Both of them frowned on any sort of remote working. Others had people on the road for most of the week every week.

It’s not going to help you too much with your search, and you’ve probably already done this, but be sure that where ever you move have good internet access.
My parents live about 5mi out of town, while I live in it. I pay $30/mo for a 25mb/s cable line.
They pay about $100/mo for a 5mb/s satellite line with about a 1second latency.
Obviously, if the place in question only has the latter, working remotely may not be an option.

Agreed. However, some companies are into working from home, so this isn’t to far of a stretch. You have to locate the right company. It is more of a liberal/innovative workplace that would promote this kind of thing. Maybe look at tech-“ier” companies that have low overhead that wouldn’t mind this?

Just be sure wherever you end up living you have decent cell signal and a solid / fast internet connection or you won’t be getting any work done.
Moving out to a rural area generally means a slower internet connection; take this into account.
And good luck finding a job that does remote work; a lot of places are buckling down, and a lot of OTHER places are very high enterprise companies where if you’re remote, you’re at their beck and call 24/7.
I am already in this position…
Oh. Well. No difference then.
You explained what i want exactly… One thing I see as a problem with what we both want, is being a IT manager requires you to interact with people. This is something that is hard to do via telecommuting.
Sure the sysadmin and the helpdesk could be obtainable via telecommuting but being a IT manager is a stretch.
However, I ask that once you find this position please share :).

I know of a few guys in big banking that are all remote. I think they are all database guys. They are married to their phones but they never leave the house. We aren’t out in the stix so the internet is good but it does save the time and hassle of the commute.

India is pretty remote
seriously though good luck I would love something like this as driving to work is a pain/waste of time. and I would love to just wake up and work. I would look into app support/consulting. Maybe ERP consulting, just learn everything about one ERP and support it.
and the beauty of remote work is you can look for a job anywhere not just your location

Any type of software development you can probably get.
SysAd stuff will be a greater challenge.
I already applied for a 1 year contract position in Antarctica recently.
