I have a list of all the physical inventory supported by the IT department (Kept in Excel). The list includes a significant protion of items already scanned via spiceworks that need updated information (Such as user info), but a vast majority of non scanned items, (including items like Phones and Monitors). I was wondering is there a way to update bulk existing inventory as well as add bulk unscanned inventory from this Excel spreadsheet into spiceworks?

I have looked through a few of the other posts, and found that we can manually upload a bulk list, but I don’t want it to interfere or over lap with the current Spiceworks list. And I’d be ok doing it manually for each device, but I have a list of almost 500 devices not on spiceworks, and nearly a hundred more that are.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I should make a note, that I’m only Desktop support, and I’m VERY green. Scripting completely confuses me, and everytime I’ve attempted I either get lost or blow things up.

This how-to should help

If you want to update existing inventory, then you need to include at least the serial number of the devices to be updated in your import csv file. That is the main part of the key Spiceworks uses to tell uniqueness of devices.

If you want to update and add devices, you also might want to try that as two separate files and two separate import steps. A more complete listing of the device fields you can import is listed at near the bottom of the script.

We had some issues with the script vs. our inventory list. Some of the objects hadn’t had their serial numbers collected, and couldn’t be updated. Unfortunately these devices were the ones that weren’t in the list on Spice works already. The head of the department has decided instead of collecting the serial numbers that we will enter the devices manually.
