I’m looking for names of schools/colleges/universities that use Spiceworks as our IT people are questioning Spiceworks safety.

I’m the only IT for a Division of a community college, but not doing any networking.

Spiceworks allows me inventory/audit help and this is all I’m using it for right now. If I get the go ahead to keep using it, I’ll try to expand my use.

Thanks for your input.

7 Spice ups

lots of educational IT admins use this. (I’ll let them own up!)

Perhaps the IT people can put some questions up as to their concerns.

You dont need the SPW having access to the 'net (stops the adverts) or you could pay for a branded version (small charge per year).

Nothing but the Kowledgebase articles leave the SPW machine in question. Have at look at their privacy policy etc.

We use it here at Norton College

Good Morning Les. There are actually quite a few of us edu users of Spiceworks. It is really quite secure as long as you secure your own data. Here is Spicework’s statement and policies with regard to privacy: Spiceworks Privacy Policy . While they are in the business of marketing, it isn’t the same model as Google or Facebook. Their model is, “We have IT pros that come to our community and use our software. We can put xxxx number of eyes on your product if you market with us. We also have IT Pros that are very involved in the community and will give you the straight talk on your marketing and product if you’re brave enough to ask.”

If you have more questions let me know. If you want to take it out of the public view, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for your replies.

I am actually quite careful NOT to introduce anything to the network and have looked through the in-house documentation at Spiceworks and online for any concerns and found none!

It seems to matter only because it’s me that’s using it and if I can throw a few names of colleges at the top brass, it may allow me to start implementing Spiceworks more fully.

As the lone IT guy here, for classrooms, labs and faculty/staff support, I really need to be quite efficient. Imaging, ticket management and inventory/audit are the main areas to keep organized.

I’ve just moved to an Academic Division and I’m flying solo, so I want to get up and running with a simple, sound system (not noisy - though Skillet is playing right now for some reason).

Anyone else to offer names of companies/colleges would be appreciated.

I really hope to get more out of Spiceworks in the future. VNC/RDP would be great, but I think our IT Network staff are blocking VNC now!!

Thanks again.

We use Spiceworks in the UW (University of Wisconsin) Colleges. It makes requests and tickets so easy using the portal. We’ve created custom tickets for Faculty and Staff to fill out and submit, they get auto assigned to the correct person\department head and we’re on our way. Makes more time for testing with Server 2012!

Thanks T

We’re not a big name, but we lean very heavily on it at the Institute of Business and Medical Careers.

Branding is a conversation going on somewhere here!

That’s a good point.

Thanks Sos (Colorado?)

Yup

We also use Spiceworks for our Helpdesk and Inventory, it works extremely well and with the ticket rules and auto assign makes assigning tickets to the right technician very straightforward.

Out network managers have had no issues over security with this product and it was in fact our Line Manager who asked me to look into spiceworks originally.

As Martin originally stated it might be worth getting the IT Staff to put forward their individual concerns and then these can be addressed individually.

Again if you have any questions please do post them and im sure everyone will do their very best to answer them.

I work for a small Christian college with only a few of us in IT. We use the helpdesk for both IT and Building Maintenance work order requests. I’ve got no security concerns at this point. As others have asked, do you or those over you have specific questions/concerns or are they just fearing the unknown?

The fear of efficiency. Unreasonable people who restrict, not equip.

As the college hires fewer full time people, IT is growing full time staff but doing less!

I can do more if I’m efficient. I’m not afraid of not having nothing to do. It is a never ending stream of tasks that I want to reduce just to IT/classroom technology related as much as possible. This gives me time to spend with the faculty and staff to develop plans to deal with digitization of records (fed mandate for our health science programs) and classroom refurbs/upgrade/installs.

I use it here at www.st-anselms.com, I’ve never had an issue with it.

K-8 Education user here in Illinois. Been using spiceworks since I started here 2 years ago (it was already in place from the prior admin). Wish I would have used this program sooner. In my last district we used Trackit from numara software. Spiceworks is a ton better and you cant beat the price honestly.

CA K-12 here.

K-8 District here (www.westamptonschools.org) and have been using it for 5 years now… Inventory, ticketing, monitoring.

ND K-12 District here (2012 Blue Ribbon School I might add)

What is the question?
