Hi,

Our user has reported that his home Internet speed is only getting 1Mb download and 0.2Mb upload so I went there to check what is causing the slow connection.

First, I checked telephone lines to see if there is any noise sound but lines seemed very clear. And then, I checked noise margin with 6.7db and line attenuation with 39 db on his modem.

Based on the attenuation rate, his premises is around 3 KM away from dslam and it should be getting at least 6Mb download speed. ADSL2+ Sync Speeds

We had a cable guy who also came to his premises(apartment) checked internal wiring from MDF to his unit. He said he could not find any issues with lines.

I thought the problem then might be the modem not working properly but it was not the modem or wireless router as I replaced the old one with a brand new one. I also checked the filter which telephone is plugged in and they seemed all good.

I had to call ISP to find out what they can do to increase the speed. They said they are not sure why he is getting under 1Mb then they need to send a technician to have a look.

If he cannot fix the problem, I am left with no option. Would changing ISP to another ISP make connection faster?

Where do you guys think the problem occurs?

If the problem is the ISP then yes. If it’s something else then no.

At this stage, the best thing to do is wait to see what the telecoms engineer says. It could be a wiring issue outside of the router and at the telecoms side.

Based on that attenuation and snr, you should be getting 8Mbit, which is approximately 1MB.

So, did you mean 1Mbit (100Kbits)? Or 1Mbyte (1000Kbits)? For the upload, .2Mbit would be a little on the low side, but depending on the hardware, could also be a limitation.

Are you sure you aren’t confusing your bits and bytes?

Yes 1Mbit, if it was 1MByte it cannot be ADSL…
