I’m sure this has been answered a hundred times, but the last time I checked Spiceworks was downlaodable and installable but they were pushing their cloud version I think and not updating anymore and eventually I couldn’t use it for whatever reason.

Are we back? I actually don’t mind paying (something reasonable) for the use of the product of course but I don’t know if much has changed. The last time thew website had similar marketing material about how it can do this and that but ended up being it had restrictions for cloud only or something.

What are, if any, the restrictions right now? Still sort-of/kind-of/maybe-not free? Is the website marketing accurate now?

Short answers.

No on-prem install, that’s long dead.
Cloud only - free for 5 or less users, paid thereafter.

It’s got a few things, but it still lacking many features people have requested, though having a paid option may push this forward.

As far as it’s viability for you, only you know. Both free and paid versions offer the same features, it’s about number of admins.

There will be slight differences. You are forced to pay for more than five console users (admins, managers, technicians) but you can choose to pay if you’re under that amount because you’ll get access to a few additional premium features. To start, task lists, pre-defined lists of tasks to complete for a ticket, and bulk ticket updates are categorized as premium features and open to the paid accounts. [Edit] And I forgot – the premium plan is free from advertisements. [/edit]

Thanks for reacting so quickly to my question. You both have answered a ton of questions.

I see a lof of people saddened by the premium move and I completely understand why.

I’m a small guy. Just 2 admins looking to do some inventory keeping mostly. Helpdesk looks super cool also. I think the cloud version should be useful for our needs. But I see there is a path to follow and I’m thankful for the info.

Inventory is still free, but takes days to get any information back.

If you’re only interested in inventory of devices (and maybe patch management and a little vulnerability assessment), Vendors > Action1 is free for 200 endpoints.

It doesn’t do helpdesk or ticketing, but it will do the inventory of your devices, patch management and risk management (to a degree).

I can vouch for Action1. I use it personally. I was introduced to it through Spiceworks and continued on since, despite me assisting with Spiceworks Cloud Help Desk from the beginning in 2006, I no longer use the inventory capabilities because they are severely lacking now.

Action1 does take some time to get used to but it manages to keep my systems up-to-date fairly well. And it’s a great price tag at the moment (i.e. free for me since I have only 24 devices).
