Definitely moving on at this point. Continued dev is gone, the direction is going to network monitoring and asset management which we already have handled.

Well, I’ll tell you based on the information presented by Jay at Spiceworld Austin this year, it seems that there is now a much heavier focus on the Spiceworks community than anything else or ever before. That being said, the products certainly have not been abandoned. I suggest checking out Version 8 if you’re dead set on sticking to the Desktop version over cloud.

If you’re concerned with the maintenance gap, and feel it is a problem, talk about it (and not on an annual basis) that is part of why this community exists you know?

Good advice, rbleattler. For us, it’s not a matter of being dead-set on sticking to the Desktop version, our security requirements won’t allow us to move to the cloud. (Not unless Spiceworks is willing to sign or provide a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement and provide verification of a third party security audit.)

Data Sovereignty concerns are becoming more stringent (I talked to Sysadmins from over a dozen countries. Cloud is fine as long as it includes…

The ability to choose a local cloud (This will often make a cloud product a America and EU only cloud)
A host of audits and other check boxes that I don’t see a free product jumping through.

Totally understand your concerns here, and your timing is great.

We’ve actually been working on a patch for 7.5, which we hope to release before the end of the month. It will include minor updates for Apache, OpenSSL, and Ruby in addition to other bug fixes. We’ll include versions for each subcomponent in the release notes.

In this patch we struck a balance between the amount of effort we want to use on patching and the effort put into new features/8.0. This explains why some bugs in 7.5 (that we do want to fix later) are not a part of this patch, such as the bugs we fixed in 8.0 that we aren’t able to back-port to 7.5 and other bugs in 7.5 that are high value but are not ready yet.

As far as our general commitment to the on-prem apps, we re-iterated our position in the Spiceworld 2017 blog post . That said, we have also been transparent here on why there are fewer releases for the Desktop app. At the same time, here are a few additional examples of our ongoing work, updates to Desktop app infrastructure , and improvements we’re working on for 8.0 (improving asset inventory accuracy, help desk feature set ).

In regard to your points about security patching, we are aware and are having internal discussions about the aging of internal / 3rd party components. In the mean time, we are monitoring CVE reports that apply to our software and try to fix or recommend workaround every time we can; here is an example of a workaround that we documented related to CVE-2017-7237. You can find the entire archive of those actions/recommendations in this Security Center page .

I Raised this issue 6 years before the CVE was issued . Do I get a badge?

You could automate the windows firewall to only allow port 69 TFTP from systems that are under device management. Someone could still hijack one device or IP to do an attack but you are not going to get your firewall configuration dumped by a hacked DMZ web server at least that way.

No further maintenance releases to-date.

Pushing a year later, and no improvement in the update cycle for the on-prem app…

Our team has already started a migration plan to a different (paid) product.

We appreciate what Spiceworks was able to deliver, and I will always love the community, but the neglect of the on-prem app is unacceptable for our business, and should be for any security-conscious user.

I wish you all the best, nonetheless.

All development work on the current version of Spiceworks (7.5.xxx) has been stopped. All new dev work is on the new version “tron-prem” which is in beta.

Yeah, 8.0 isn’t happening. They are working on TronPrem which currently isn’t great. I have the beta installed and it isn’t close to production ready.
