Hi all I know that with iSCSI i cant do what i want unless i use clustered file system or 3d party apps (which are no longer available) like metasan or sanmp.

https://support.studionetworksolutions.com/hc/en-us/articles/201079079-How-to-share-iSCSI-storage-with-several-computers-Hint-download-iSANmp

Are there any other such softwares free or paid that do the same thing today ?

I MUST use iSCSI as my thecus only supports iSCSI and isnt a NAS.

Thanks

Can you explain the situation you need to use this in, it might help.

I ask because there are options out there, but if you need to present from your Thecus, then some of the other options may add another layer, such as TrueNAS, GlusterFS or CephFS.

Depending on your goal, you might also be able to present a single iSCSI to another device, Windows or Linux, then share that again as another format, such as CIFS.

It’s not clear if you simply need multiple devices to access the share or specifically iSCSI direct.

hi there and thanks

i need iscsi for all windows machines to access the same shared iscsi storage, this old thecus only has iscsi no smb no nothing and i dont want to use intermediate machine for sharing that iscsi drive

isnt there any software that will allow me to use the thecus iscsi raid drives (on windows) at the same time ? like the ones i mentionbed above that are now defunct ?

I got many files there that i need those computers to access them at the same time and i dont want to get rid of the thecus nor add an intermediate windows machine to attach the iscsi drive then share it to other machines.,

cheers

So there is no technical reason you NEED iSCSI, this is just all you have available to use, this is what I was looking for.

Technically you just need access to the files on the not device, but your historical Thecus doesn’t offer anything else but iSCSI.

Can you share the model of your device, I am unable to locate any information about Thecus devices that only support iSCSI.

Hi …

Did you confuse the usage of SAN vs file server ?

sure Thecus i5500 iSCSI Storage Array System

no my nas only supports iSCSI

So this is a SAN, hence you can’t use any other protocol.

I applaud you for trying to keep usable kit in action, however, you’re already aware of one of it’s major limitations, excluding the fact it’s almost 20 years old.

I am not aware of products similar to those you mentioned, but they likely don’t exist as most systems that support this are now built-in.

My preference would be 1 machine with the LUN and other machines connecting in using CIFS, and this assumes I would even use this device at all. In all likelihood i wouldn’t use this, even in a lab.

It’s spec is massively underpowered for anything meaningful.

If you have to use it, I’d use the in-line device option.

Given it’s spec, age and limitations, I wouldn’t go out of your way to use it, it’s hurting you already, cut your losses and replace it.

Get your data off it using a single machine and move forward.
