Hi Guys

So I’m an IT Manage( ALMOST 3 YEARS) for a company with approx 150 Users,2 Sites,3 Different Network (2 are Development internal network).

I’m a one-man show and have the responsibility for everything,I do the Helpdesk,I install upgrade maintain Servers, I manage the FW, Switches, VPN, Office 365, AVAYA, Install new computers for workers, anything u can just name,

(We don’t use any CLOUD Infrastructure except Office 365)

I got a job offer to move to a new Company. that has about 100 Users and the don’t even have one server on site, The company is native Cloud,

The new company knows that I’m not familiar to much with cloud but they’re willing to take me for the job.

Is it Worth leaving my current job?

Whats your opinion?

Thanks

Only you can answer that and the grass isn’t always greener.

I haven’t change jobs too often in my career. I tend to stay for the long haul regardless of other temping job offers. But that’s not everyone.

Looks like you are overtaxed in your current position. Moving to the new job might be a relief in some aspects and a nightmare in others. You’ll be relied upon to know what you don’t know. It will be a serious challenge. Are you up for that?

Not sure posting it in spiceworks support is the right place. I’m going to request it is moved

There is a lot to consider with a move of this type.

Comparing the two companies, are they both stable, growing, how much you could grow and learn, the total compensation package, vacation, PTO, benefits, how long was the predecessor in that position, would you have one or many managers to report to? Are you satisfied being the one person in your department? Your new traveling time? What’s the chance of you being promoted above your current level at your company?

Only you can evaluate everything.

Good Luck!

Sounds like you have a good job security where you are at. I have seen many employees leave a company because they thought it was going to be better but either didn’t understand the product very well, at all, or need more training then the employer was willing to invest. They ended up trying to get their old job back but by then it is too late. Obviously moving to another job is always a risk, the question is, is it worth that risk and do you have a backup if it doesn’t work out?

Don’t let the ‘cloud’ scare you. Sure, AWS / Azure /etc. have different interfaces but the rest is not much different than let’s say an offsite or remote data-center or whatever.

But yeah, that choice is yours. We don’t know the details (e.g. benefits, salary, commute, etc)

Yes. Leave.

Just have to weigh out your options and see what they offer for benefits to go there and go from there… Will you still be the only one doing all, is there a pay raise and so on

Cloud is likely the future. You can go to the future or stay & build a cloud future at your current company. IMO see if the juice is worth the squeeze at the job offered. If it’s not, stay at your current employer.

The question really is “what you want the answer to be” ?

I would think there is something very wrong when a person can call himself “IT manager” when he is a one man show ? Literally IT admin with nobody to manage. Sadly I think you have sunk deep in for too long. No offense intended.

You failed to mention the scope for the new job. I do not think you will be managing the “server hardware” as you are not “Data Center ready”…so at most you will be either handling sales or internal staff matters…but not really leading a IT team as you do not have management experience ?

Where is the growth, both personally and in terms of company future?

The new company is smaller in terms of user base, so what about it is tempting you?

If they’re paying more, sure.

In my experience it’s always better to change role if you believe the benfits outweigh the negatives, yes there’s a bunch of “cloud” I mean network servers to learn about, but you get the challenge of a new role and new people. You may find it’s not what you wante, but you may find you excel in the new role. Change is worth the risk, if it means you have less workload for equal or greater pay.

There are lots of variables to weigh and everyone has their own mix of what’s right for them.

At first glance, your current job sounds pretty busy and I’m surprised that you don’t have at least one tech working with you. If everything else was equal, the work load could be less at the new place.

Computers are computers and services are services so I wouldn’t worry too much about the “cloud first” aspect of the new place.

Best way to answer would be get out pen and paper the write out the pros and cons about the situation. Then make your decision from there, I have done this a few times and it has helped me in the past for sure.

It’s a lot to ask for one person to take care of 150! For that alone I’d consider making the move.

It’s overtaxing, sure. We’re about half the number of users that you are, but I’ve been doing this for over fifteen years. I enjoy it! Not going to lie, I’m a bit depressed this is where things seem to have peaked for me, but taking another job at this point seems to inevitably lead to some sort of travel. The wife has made it quite clear this is NOT an option. So if the company you’re at seems stable, and will be around for a while, it’s definitely an option! You should get fairly consistent yearly wage adjustments, with the occasional raise. At some point, you might even point out that moving some, if not all, of their operations to the Cloud might be in the cards. We’ll probably be looking at it seriously when we do our next server refresh, in five to seven years time. Now that I’m forty-six, it’s MUCH harder to support all of this on a constant basis, though.

Of course, there is also something to be said for growth, and this company sounds like they’re willing to back you on that. Make no mistake, Cloud, in it’s many forms, is the future. You’re not going to hurt yourself by jumping in at the ground level now. That being said, take a GOOD long look at that company. Many that utilize Cloud do so because of it’s short-term nature, which can be good, like being able to spin development servers, etc. up and down inside of a few weeks, or even hours. It also can be bad, with a ‘fly-by-night’ company just throwing money left, right and center at the providers for services they could save tons on by doing things in-house. Hey, if they survive, they’ll only be making more money to spend!

If you have to ask, move.

If you’ve been offered the job it sounds like they trust your knowledge… As for no servers, this appears to bethe way of the future, people don’t want to be tied to their desks and what to be able to work from anywhere should the need arise… If you are nervous about change, change is good, it forces you to engage the brain and to adapt… Do have a look at azure courses, Microsoft has moocs in coursera, you can even look at virtual labs from Microsoft…

As for job security, that is a question that only you will be able to answer but the more knowledge you acquire, the more employable… I think others have said it already but research the company offering you the job to see how successful and recession proof they are… And the same for your current one…
