… but already I want to just stick my head in a hole in the ground and refuse to come back to work. Like an ostrich.

I ran into a new user today. A “tech savvy” Mac person. Right from the get go she started asking questions as to why the Marketing department are not on Macs. Why the art department is not on Macs. They just work. My response was, “Everything works. You just need to not be an a-whole and know how to use it. But it works.”

The issue is this new user refuses to work on a Windows PC. They want to use their personal MacBook for everything. I flat out denied this request due to the endless permissions and support requests that this user will throw at me.

I am setting up the user to work through RDP into a Windows PC. Not opening up a can of worms so soon into the year.

Stick to your guns. If you give in to one they will all want it.

Yep. When the user said they were actually “tech savvy” I rolled my eyes and nearly scratched my corneas. I was then waiting for the “I am vegan too”.

Why do they hire morons like this?

Q: How can you tell if someone uses a Mac / is a vegan / has kids?

A: They won’t f*cking shut up about it.

My wife does videography and photography for her private business so I understand why a Mac in those areas may be useful. I have never had to professionally support Macs (other than being my wife’s tech support) so I understand why they are not common place in typical businesses that use windows clients for workstations.

When my wife worked for the Outdoor Channel - she had a Windows PC for admin stuff (web surfing, email, etc). She had a Mac for professional tasks (video editing related). There were separate support departments for each system.

Can the work this user is responsible for be done “better” on Macs? What is the business justification for it? Then your side, support. Who will support it? How much $ will supporting that 1 device cost compared to the 1 windows system for that user (assuming you can do the work on the windows system)?

Maybe have her justify it in terms of $ for her and your side - if it comes down to it.

“If your business case for Mac OS can beat my business case for Windows, and you’re willing to pay for them from YOUR budget, we’ll move both departments to Macs.”

I hate these people even more than I hate most people.

These Mac people will never stop. I have friends that work in graphic design, etc. that say Windows PCs come nowhere near the performance of Macs for any graphics work. What? The CAD systems I buy for our engineers would MURDER any Macs these people can afford.

Ah. You should have said “self-described ‘tech savvy’” in your first post.

If it makes you feel any better, I also rolled my eyes when I read the “tech savvy user” bit.

This is the beautiful part… All the user will mostly work out of is Microsoft Office and moving a picture here or there. No justification to work from a Mac. Ever! Even the art department is happy about the PCs.

I bet she is a 1337 MaX0r, you better let her do what she wants, or else she will put an apple sticker on your car.

Pretty logical. Which is exactly why it will fail. She already gave her justification, {insert whiney voice here} “They just work”

3 Spice ups

That was true in 1998.

Now? Mac has been running on Intel processors for ten and a half years. The software (assuming Photoshop) is exactly the same. The video cards? Exactly the same. Granted, an apples-to-oranges comparison will show the Mac solidly outperforming the Windows machine, but the same can be said in the other direction.

They just work, but she doesn’t because she is a complainer.

It’s like watching Potassium hit water with this community and its view on apple products lol.

hate to say it… but sometimes if a user is better used to a certain software, then perhaps there is justification for it…

I love to hate on the Mac people too… but i also defend windows against linux people who brag that their systems are superior… and also defend linux from typical “windows rules” people

Perhaps windows is just as good as Mac technically… and i’ll totally argue in your favour if this “tech savvy” user simply claims Mac is better… but if they want it because they know it better and can be more productive… perhaps the purchase can at least be discussed?

This sheds more light for sure…

HR problem, not IT. Why does she still have a job? Fire her already.
