Sometimes you will feel stress regardless how much you love the work, add to that the peer environment. I’ll find my self relaxing with ear pods listening to music.

Great for you ! for me for small responsibility ( No risk of server being down, No Failed Software, Not Involved Someone in high position ) yes, sometime it’s fun and easy task. But when involve so much more responsibility and like your organization depend on it, that’s when sometime people get nervous and think twice before act.

What is your current Role if you don’t mind me asking?

i am IT Consultant so there is no limit where i could be. I just give solution to my client. But most of my work today is on server and networking and IT Support.

few of the things that I had issues with, with my old work was… office timings and stress level were always up so high! even during my first month on-board.

my old boss would joke around on the first few months that he could replace me with 10 other people that he could pay less. during training or what-not. he would joke about the same thing even after my first year.

work timings was ok at first. but began to crawl up to me and up till i got home.we worked 60 hours per week with 1 day weekends. and it was real hell as the previous guy I replaced had no proper documentation and boss expects me to keep up after their employee which worked for them for 9 Years…

anyway

I’m glad I have work - life balance now.

that’s what was missing from my last job.

I was way more stressed at my last job than this one, the major difference is no more 2 hour commute, no more on-call and no evenings or weekend work.

This has meant I have been able to develop outdoor hobbies such as Photography, Wildlife, and Metal Detecting.

My motto - work to live, not live to work.

The real key is to reject as much crap as possible. People are the real problem for us. We can sort out the issues as long as we give ourselves the headspace to get it done. Basically don’t let the admin staff and even management bully you. If you are good at your job you can say “no that is not a reasonable timeframe” but you will constantly have to remind the people to not promise expectations that cannot be met, always remember the rule is to "underpromise and overdeliver! ". Also remember lack of planning does create an emergency but not of your creation so it is not really your emergency, don’t let them blame you.

Well that was quite the rant… well it had to be said iI think.

As Briser and BiscuitKing say, the real key is to leave work at work, and on the whole to leave work at the proper time.

Get a work life balance, and when you’re not at work, then stop thinking about work. OK , all of us will have some moment of realisation of how to fix a problem at silly o clock on sat morning, or at other off-hour times, that’s fine, but realise, that your time is your time.

Like briser said, develop a hobby, i’ve taken up running over the last couple of years, i find that’s great for clearing your head - also playing an insturment is good for relaxing after work.

Main point though, (again been said before) is you work to live not live to work… At the end of the day, your employer will show absolutely zero loyalty to you if times get tough, you don’t have any reason to work yourself in to an early grave for them.

In some of my most stressful moments in IT I found the most comfort with my team mates. After all we’re partners in crime. We’ve gone through the same tough times. There’s nothing like talking about a situation during our down time. It’s very therapeutic.

In the army we used to have after action reviews where we’d discuss what should have happened, what actually happened, what went right, what went wrong, how to do it better next time and so on.

Once it is 5:00 pm I completely forget about this place until 8:00 am the next morning. On the weekends I don’t even look at my phone and have plenty of hobbies, gym and house stuff I can do to make myself happy.

Work doesn’t stress me out until I go too long without a big project to keep me busy. Day-to-day, it’s a bit monotonous but far from stressful.

I have a lot of things I have to do daily, but the routine is really rote at this point. I keep music on, or music podcasts, and just strike up conversations with coworkers when it’s obvious we both have some downtime. (For people who think downtime is a work sin, let me remind you that busy != productive.) PLUS, socialization at work means better team relationships and being included in their projects down the line when they need a hand.

I also leave work at work. When 5PM hits, I reboot my PC and enjoy the quick drive home. I try to do a lot of non-IT stuff at home–read fiction books, design and build furniture, paint and draw, sew, make jewelry, etc. Having hobbies reminds me to appreciate my job, because it’s not really that stressful, it pays the bills, and it lets me do whatever I please in my hours away from work.

Leave work and enjoy all the people in your life and do things that are not related to technology. Also remember to rest.

Allowing time to rest and recharge is super important. Each of us is different in how we accomplish this but it’s important to leave time for that. All work and no rest can destroy a person.
