Was curious if I could virtualize XenServer in vSphere as a VM. I know if it worked, performance would not be great. I just wanted to look at it and play with the interface. I don’t have a spare box.

I plan on rolling out virtualization next year and pretty much decided on vSphere, but I thought since between the holidays it may be slow to check it out.

Think it might work?

{"@type":"Person
{"@type":"Answer

I doubt it, I think it requires VT on the CPU, which it won’t find inside of a VM.

2011-11-28T10:01:06.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/2
@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

My guess is that you are right, but gonna attempt since I have a bit of spare time.

2011-11-28T10:16:37.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/3
@type":"Person
Denis-Kelley
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Denis-Kelley"}},{"@type":"Answer

Funny thing is that it installed. Playing to see if I can add some storage and then install XP. I played with some settings, but thoroughly expect it to fail.

I got farther than I thought. I really just wanted to see the console interface and how menus and whatnot looked like.

I drop the results after playing awhile.

Again, thanks for replying. Didn’t think anyone had a real world answer, but I guess everyone decided to stay away from the mad scientist.

2011-11-28T12:07:40.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/4
@type":"Person
Denis-Kelley
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Denis-Kelley"}},{"@type":"Answer

Hyper-V will run on ESXi5 (Not the other way around though).

2011-11-28T14:50:49.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/5
@type":"Person
StorageNinja
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/StorageNinja"}},{"@type":"Answer

should all be good, i’ve managed to run ESXi (4 and 5) under vmplayer, plus a management server running vsphere all on a win 7 pc with 4G RAM.

Most things are possible when just playing around and speed isn’t an issue.

also managed to connect a virtual FreeNAS server to the above environment on the same just for the fun of it

2011-11-29T06:32:41.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/6
@type":"Person
Kenny8416
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Kenny8416"}},{"@type":"Answer

Very cool, albeit no very productive exercise. XenServer runs fine, but ChristopherO hit it on the nail. Everything works, but can’t run Windows VM due to passthru of VT.

This was all just an exercise to play with the interface of XenCenter. Was fun though. I needed storage, so worked and created NFS on a Win2K8 VM to create the XP VM, which led to the error, but was expecting it.

I’m glad I did the exercise though. I think I like working with vSphere over XenServer.

2011-11-29T06:44:24.000Z
https://community.spiceworks.com/t/just-for-giggles-and-yes-this-might-be-a-little-silly-but/114132/7
@type":"Person
Denis-Kelley
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Denis-Kelley"}},{"@type":"Answer
