I am interested to know who you are using for having your laptops repaired for things like, smashed lcd screens, broken charging ports and laptops needing a general service when getting too hot. We require a company that can work on HP ProBook 4520s and ProBook 4510s, and be able to collect the unit from us, either themselves or by courier.
Also can you state if you think the labour prices are fair, and if there is anyone you are not using and why.
We had been using www.laptoprepair.co.uk/, but recently they have been taking ages to get the parts in.

For most things, I’ll do it myself. Most ofthe parts are bought from eBay and the tools either come with it or we already have. I much prefer to repair it myself, for the small gratification of fixing it, and the fact it works out alot cheaper in most cases.

All our laptops are HP and we do all repairs in house. Fairly easy and cheap to do. Only thing i wont start is motherboard fault finding… Im a if it aint working replace kinda person.
Why dont you look at getting some parts your self?

And you can manage your own SLA’s for fixing and not have to really on other companies letting you down. Whats a few hours of your time to repair compared to wating weeks or a month for a 3rd party to sort it out?

Exactly, only time I’ll send it off is when I have literally tried everything else. And even then I’d be half tempted just to buy a new one as it would be quicker and potentially cheaper.

I used to use CRM Laptops but they became unreliable and dishonest (IMHO).
Now I have started using Notebooks2Go - they are based locally to the business which is great and their service is good also
I fully agree with what you have said above, and I do hard drive, ram and optical replacement/upgrades myself, but the support here has been cut dramitically, the guy who did all the PC repairs has been let go and it was agreed that all other repairs would be sent off.
We fix most laptop problems oursevles.
I don’t think it is difficult, and once you have done a few it is second nature.
If you get stuck, you can search youtube for step by step videos on almost an aspect of fixing a laptop.
It is cheaper, faster, and less hassle than sending it off.

Out of interest guys how much are you getting charged for say, replacing faulty hard drive? or replacing cracked screen?
screen was around £160, plus £60 to look at it, so £220.
Also, i use http://www.accupart.co.uk/ to supply the screens, they are good with returns, and they ship out fast.
They also sell cheaper if you are buying more than one.
The only problem i can see is they aren’t OEM screens, but we don’t mind here, and they come with a warranty.

£60 to look at it?! Owch!
I sent one off recently for a new keyboard and new charge port (the pin inside was snapped) and that was £121 in total.
£30 for inspection, then the rest was keyboard and pin then + VAT.

always had ‘factory warrenty’ including accidental damage, so not used any for quite a while.
But last firm I used was servo/ICM/Phoenix/whatever-they-are-called now and had everything non-factory under them, printers/servers the lot.

Honestly? That’s not far off for shipping a unit out for repair.
You can, however, do it in-house for far less. I use www.laptopscreen.com for LCD replacement. It takes about an hour (give or take) to do any sort of internal repair on a laptop (screen, power jack, CPU, whatever).
Most non-Apple laptops use about the same assembly process (Sony Vaio units being a ferociously notable exception), so once you get one apart, odds are you’ll be able to get others apart without much trouble. Heck, HP and Dell even have their service manuals available online. Talk about easy!

Now officially Phoenix (again).
That’s also who I use for printer/server maintenance (for the last 10 years)

Myself and eBay usually get my laptops fixed, for work it depends if its in warranty or not. and if not then provided the parts are cheap and the problem 100% identified then its me again for the fixing there of
