We just noticed one of the machines on the network isn’t being scanned by spiceworks. When we find the IP address of the machine in spiceworks, it points to a very old machine that has been gone for quite some time. Obviously the ip address has been assigned to this new machine. I scan for the system in the inventory using the ‘Scan’ option under ‘My Network’ in the inventory section, all it does is update a few things about the old system. Specifically the Last Updated Time: field.

How can we force Spiceworks to resync all the new DNS entries for various machine and rescan the network. Who knows how many systems out there have this issue?

Anyone else come across this problem?

{"@type":"Person
{"@type":"Answer

Change that device to manually scan - then change its IP to something else to keep the data.

From here a new scan should find the new machine

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

If you remove a system, there is nothing out there that I know of that knows you’ve done this - as far as SW is concerned the device is offline X number of days - it doesn’t know you’ve replaced it with another device. Perhaps your DNS scavenging isn’t working so SW still seen something registered to this IP and you simply renamed it when you added a new machine.

{"@type":"Person
Rod-IT
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}},{"@type":"Answer

We have a lot of custom fields that would be handy to have with data on these old machines. There is no way to simply allow the IP to be associated with the new, updated computer?

Is there a reason Spiceworks inventory is keyed off IP address instead of simply the device name?

{"@type":"Person
joshsims
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/joshsims"}},{"@type":"Answer

A complete scan of the system with that IP address should show that it is a significantly different system than it had been… or even if the entry was updated with all the new information, replacing the old, that would be fine since our custom fields would remain… there is literally no way to do this?

{"@type":"Person
joshsims
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/joshsims"}},{"@type":"Answer
