So, some side jobs have fallen into my lap and I just want to make sure I cover all my bases. I’ve done side jobs before, but these two that are coming my way look to be more than the typical job, and look to be more long-term and routine. What are some things that a person like myself who is starting a new IT business should think of? Some of the big things that I have on my mind are limiting my liabilities, protecting myself in case something goes wrong on the job and I could be sued for something (loss of data, server crash, etc.). Wondering about if I need to set up a contract to cover myself, etc. Those types of questions are all on my mind and I always like to know as much as I can before venturing into new areas or new projects. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

1 Spice up

public liability insurance

a client contract for each job/client covering expectations etc,. scope of work, and most importantly payment terms.

Also, thinking of using Spiceworks at each location, and then Homerun them back to my install.

I am a bit late to this but as not many have replied to the thread.

Get the legal beagle stuff done properly, accounting, insurance, contracts.

In terms of software, I would not suggest Spiceworks based on performance issues, configuration time at different sites & scanning problems, it does not play nicely with multi-site client type setups, as you are starting out it may seem very easy to manage but what happens when you have 10 clients? 15? Start with the right tool that you can use to grow at scale.

Contracts Contracts Contracts! Look into Docusign or Adobe Echo for contracts/signature collection. You’ll get far more protection with that if something ever goes to court. Insist on agreeing to a contract, don’t start any work without one.

What type of work are you likely to be doing? Is it on-going support or more project based? would they call you when they need you?
