I’m re-doing a network for a small local business. We have a total of 8 wired connections as well as about 10 or so wireless connections. Nothing fancy, no VPN, etc. I’ve always used home routers in this type of scenario, but this client is wanting something a bit more reliable. I look forward to any information you all can provide. Thanks in advance.

A small Ubiquiti, Meraki or Aerohive AP would do if you need some advanced management functionality. If not, an off the shelf AP would do just fine.

^ Those are good brands.
Something to consider: once wireless is made generally available, expect usage to spike sharply. Two APs to cover the area may be good (consider phones, tablets, laptops, guest SSID, business & “play” SSIDs, et al).
Ubiquiti is a great, cost effective start. Meraki has crazy flexibility and manageability, but comes with a higher price.

I’ve heard really good things about Aruba’s product line. We currently have 2 Motorola RFS6000’s with WiNG5 and 16 AP650s but I also have to cover a couple hundred users and a few hundred thousand SQFT. Maybe a Motorola RFS4010 with a couple of their APs would be too much for you, but the new WiNG OS is great to work with. Or Brocade which is the same thing just cheaper…
Otherwise I have heard really good things about either Meraki and Aruba’s products

Do you have a budget in mind? that would help with reccommendations
Depending on size, we usually deploy a mixture of MikroTik and Ubiquity.
The budget for equipment needs to be below $500 dollars ideally. I’m thinking at this point of going with Ubiquiti EdgeRouterLite, UniFi AP feeding off the router for WAP, then a gb unmanaged switch for the wired connections. Something like a netgear prosafe 16 port.
I’ve never used ANY enterprise level networking equipment before so I know setup will not be plug and play. I plan to set this up in my office and work out the kinks before deploying to clients site. I need to gain knowledge in this area badly, and this may be a great way to get my feet wet.
What do you guys think?
Hi Cidah, you may want to look into the Cisco RV Series it would suit your budget and would have the reliability you are looking for here is a link for more information. ( Cisco Small Business RV Series Routers - Cisco ) if you have further questions or need assistance please feel free to send me a message. hope this helps!
Ok, so I think I’ve narrowed the router down between the Ubiquiti EdgeRouterLite with AP, OR a Mikrotik RB2011 with wireless built in? I’ve no experience with either interface. Which would I be better off starting with to learn?
