Hi Matt
I feel your pain sort of, I say sort of because I made myself voluntarily redundant!
I am also in the unenviable position of having an ex wife working in the IT recruitment industry. This although it may sound as if I having problems, and to contradict myself has actually been a double edged sword.
Agencies appear to have a strangle hold on the UK IT tech job Market at the moment. So as GPB2992 said its defintely time to update and polish that C.V.
Then join and upload your c.v. to - Jobsite, jobserve, the IT job board, CWjobs
Also go to http://www.iprofile.org/ join that and fill out your profile. Not that special but some agencies WILL use it to resource candidates.
Be careful of job descriptions. Some competeing agencies will advertise for the same position. One rate could be better with one of them. Call and check location. If in doubt see if you can phone them to ask. It tends to be first come first put forward by. You dont want to compensate your wages for their profit margins.
Go for both Contract and perm positions. I have contracted before and it can sometimes double your incoming wage. Its great for keeping money rolling in for bills. You can take low level short term contracts and still get a decent hourly rate. Remember pennies coming in…
I have been advised that there is a lot of stuff about but overqualified people coupled with the amount of people applying for vacant positions means c.v.'s are getting cherry picked.
I have also found that to be annoyingly suspect at times due to being too overqualified for perm positions and at interview being told I will get bored. Maybe true for contract but not it seems perm places.
I tell you, its a like a game of chess with the luckiest person in the world that cant play the damn game but always seems to win.
Anyway my full name is Kevin Carrell. I will add you to my contacts (if that is ok…) to my linkd in profile.
If you want to talk, just send me a message or ask me to send you one. That way if I get any notifications of vacancies around your neck of the woods I can let you know. Oh Jobserve alchemy (its a beta) is ok for getting alerts of vacancies when they are first posted.
Hope that helps
Kev
