I’m getting more people asking me to look at their computer because they hear that I am an “IT guru”(their words, not mine). I’ve started charging for this, but I am getting tired of disconnecting my personal computer to work on theirs. This being said, I’m wanting to build a small network in my home/garage.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place online or in Washington State, that had refurbished/used switches, patch panels and routers for a reasonable low cost. I’ve checked out NewEgg, but don’t know of any other place to look besides manufacturers sites. I’d appreciate any input on this.

  • check out www.monoprice.com for your patch panels and misc parts for there

  • hardware, depending on what you’re looking to spend, ebay? you can get a 24port gig switch from hp for around 150$ with lifetime warranty (not sure what your budget is)

  • another option would be a usb wireless card if you had wireless at home, quick addition to a pc you’re working on and connect it into your wifi at home

Just buy some wireless usb dongles and set up wifi. A spare monitor, keyboard and mouse and your good to go!

CXTec has some solid deals on refurb networking gear. High quality production ready.

That said I use these at home. They’re dirt cheap and reliable enough, but cheap enough that you can just buy three of them. (I also have a few older higher end Catalysts for a cisco lab, but the 2950 series is my favorite)

Other than that, Monoprice is great for cabling and cabling related things.

For switches/routers/etc… I would highly recommend EBay. I built out my entire CCNA lab using equipment purchased from EBay.

For patch panels, keystones, cabling, etc… Jason.W is on target. Monoprice equipment is pretty good quality stuff and is extremely cheap.

ebay is my friend. I get good cheap cables at https://www.cablewholesale.com/ Good idea with the wireless card. USB wireless cards are cheap and easy, although I find wired to be better when troubleshooting a problem system. I got a Zywall USG 20W business router/firewall refurb off amazon for $120. It allows for multiple LANs and WLANs so you could keep your friends computers separate from your own.

Wow, Monoprice is cheap, and they have CAT 5/6 flexboot ends at a great price (I hate standard boots)! Thanks guys!

Thanks guys, I’ll definitely check out monoprice.
