I had an end user come back off of holiday today complaining that the computer wasn’t behaving right. When pushed for an explanation of what this is supposed to mean I was told that ‘Word’ is just pinned to the taskbar and wont open any files. Excel appears to be ok.

Anyway, I had to go to that floor anyway so said I would take a quick look. Two seconds is all it took for me to diagnose that the 2nd screen wasn’t on.

Seriously?

That’s exactly why we don’t give them second screens.

We have a few with two monitors and it’s like the world has come to an end when they turn one off. Or the power goes out long enough where the monitors don’t come back on. Always remember KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. A pen and paper would be suitable for some users I have had over the years.

We don’t give them two screens, simple as. I tell them it is for budget and ergonomic reasons, what i really want to say is something along the lines of you can barely use one why should you have two ?!

FIFY.

Everyone in our business has two screens, and we never have these kind of issues.

I think you need to get yourself a cattleprod on order.

Seriously?

On a Monday morning I wouldn’t have the words to deal with that. One of two things would happen, either I would just just stare at them blankly, shake my head then walk away without saying a word. Or I would unplug the monitor and carry it out with me, if they protest or ask if it is broken I would respond with “Yes, it is not compatible with stupid”.

Same here, or almost never anyway.

I would like to wire up all the chairs in my office to a IP controlled Power Strip. Then when users do things like that you just power up their chair for a period of time commensurate with the stupidity of their (in)action.

Ahhhhh day dreaming again.

Ugh… i had a teacher at the school I work at come back from summer break and complain that her computer would not turn on.
I asked her over hte phone whether it was plugged in, if the power light came on, etc… which she said yes.

Finally i just walked down to her room and saw her turning her monitor on and off, with just a blank screen, as if to show me that she wasnt wrong.

Then i asked her if she owned an iMac at home, to which she replied yes…

…so i turned on the computer that was sitting next to her desk >.< and she thought it was a bit excessive to have to turn two things on and off every day … yikes

Management should know better

“should” <— there’s your problem.

All of our users here have two monitors. I have never had an issue like this. Don’t know if it increases productivity or not but my users seem to like it/Want it.

3 monitors here - but I have to babysit developers - they generally have “stupider” questions…

OH the nerve of some end-users…

General Rule of the Workplace # 73 - Management never knows better.

Same here. All users have two monitors. But our users never turn anything off before they leave so we’d never have an issue with them forgetting to turn it back on.

We have certain users with multiple screens here. Unfortunately a few of those are the people in Management who can barely tie their own shoes. See a previous rant to find out how one of our Management users claimed not to understand how to plug in headphones or dial a phone…
