Hi,
I was just wondering if anybody knew of a good alternative product for Microsoft Project. I work for a small company (less than 50 users) and we are loathed to shell out £400 a time for a Project license for users who only use 5-10% of the functionality.
We just need something simple and cheap to offer users in place of project that will allow them to view and create project plans and gantt charts.
Does anyone have any products that they use or any suggestions?
Cheers.

Just like microsoft project.
http://openproj.org/openproj
I looked into this for the same reasons, here’s my list:
Gantt Project
Open Project
Open Workbench
I also found a few gantt excel sheets, one of which I used to meet my needs, laying out my backup windows. Manual but acceptable for a graphic layout of what happens when.
Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies on this one. It’s good to have a few different options to look at as an alternative to spending all that cash on Project licenses. It might mean I can spend the savings on a new server!! ha ha…
cheers,

I know this is an old post, but I just read about this one:

Dink, that’s worth a closer look for sure, thanks.
We’re still using Project for the most part. There is one feature that Open Project just doesn’t have, that we can see, which is the ability to show the date in the Gantt chart for the task completion.

Yes, I love it. Only been using it about a month now. I was even reading about some kind of offline thing it has so you can just sync to your desktop and word. Its great for personal use. I am not sure about the pricing for business though. The company who makes it is ADVENTNET and they make some great IT products like OPManager.

That’s cool. And for free? Timmy, can you compare Zoho and google apps?

I never really used google apps but I did hear that the zoho products that google has are better. Specifically importing existing docs from word. I have not tried it yet cause I really didn’t need to import any docs yet. Zoho seems to be in front as far offerings and product maturity though. I just wish they would give a little more for the free version.

What’s interesting is that you can sign in using a google or yahoo account…suspicious.

I don’t think its suspicious. Its about time they started this. I have too many accounts to keep track of. I log into microsoft with my yahoo id.
I think OpenProj and Open Workbench are not maintained anymore since there are no more new releases. Only Gantt Project is still active. Another solution is RationalPlan .
