We currently have 5 2960’s and one 3960 for our core. We’re expanding and needing to add two more switches. Thing is, with money being as tight as it is, could we use Ubiquiti’s Edgeswitches in lieu of more Cisco’s? Or is that just asking for trouble? Just curious how well different branded switches play with one another.

I don’t think I have ever been in a facility of any size where every switch was the same brand or model to begin with.
I’ve been in IT for nearly 15 years with two companies and both were Cisco, Cisco, Cisco. But now that I’m at a nonprofit school, the budget needs are quite different. The person before me at my current job was all Cisco, just curious if I ventured out into more budget friendly waters!
I’ve been in it for almost 17 years. My first environment was all 3Com (yea, late 1990’s). Later it was a mix of 3Com and HP Procurve.
Now in modern times I am pretty much HP Procurve all the way. I have Cisco’s certification but not really interested in their switches and routers. My HP equipment is half the price, simpler to deal with, gets exactly the same job done. HP Support is FREE and support the products for the life of the product with no support contracts.
My only Cisco product is an ASA5500 firewall,…that I got used.
My guess is that you’d be fine mixing,…but it is just a guess. Maybe someone else will read this that has mixed those two together before.
I wouldn’t see and issue mixing the switches. The only question is if the Ubiquiti switches have what you need features wise. They are great for smaller environments though lack some features used in larger environments such as stacking, SFP+ in the 24 port model, and support is via email which is not ideal for a business environment unless you have a few spares to swap out while you wait to hear back from them.
