Hey guys,

I recently setup Office 365 for my organisation. I’m still quite new to 365. This is a new AD domain with AD Sync. We have an old domain with email addresses that people still use and a new domain which will be the default.

I basically need to add an address to each user as an alias for the old domain. I understand that I need to do this manually using the proxyAddresses attribute in the account properties. No problem.

My question is as follows. By default this appears to be blank.

I’m going to add SMTP:name@domain.com and smtp:name@olddomain.com

Do I need to add the name@company.onmicrosoft.com for compatibility or can I leave that out?

Currently even though the proxyAddresses field is blank Exchange online seems to have added the user to every domain by default. I’m assuming my change will override this?

Thanks,
H

Office 365 will automatically create domain.onmicrosoft.com email addresses for all user accounts. You can leave that out when adding the proxy addresses.

When you add the proxy addresses, AD sync will update the accounts with the new SMTP addresses. the domain.onmicrosoft.com will remain on all accounts as secondary smtp addresses.

Thank you. Exactly what I wanted to know
