Good day, all! I am REALLY excited to meet a lot of you crazy people in Austin, later this month. I have never been to SpiceWorld, nor have I been to Austin. I am looking forward to the experience and I can’t wait to take in all of the sights. I would love to hear from SpiceHeads and GreenGuys, alike, who are self-proclaimed SpiceWorld veterans.
For the SpiceHeads, what are some of your favorite things about SpiceWorld? Favorite things about interactions and activities with GreenGuys and vendors?
For the GreenGuys/Gals, what are some of your favorite things about SpiceWorld? Any memorable interactions with particular SpiceHeads? (Who should I hide from?)
Thank you, in advance, for taking a moment to respond. Have a great day, everyone!

It’ll be my first time as well. I was able to visit Austin not that long ago for a CTRL+ALT+TECH show, and one thing to know is that Austin promotes itself as being “weird”.

My favorites are networking with IT Pros and the parties…
Since it is your first Spiceworld and first trip to Austin, be sure you try these (in no particular order) -
- BBQ - not all BBQ is created equal, but there are several good BBQ joints in and around Austin
- Shiner Bock
- Sixth Street
- All of the Spiceworld parties
- Gus’ Famous Fried Chicken ( a few minute walk from the convention center)

I, too, have a first-timer question that might seem dumb…
What do we wear? I assume this is a bit more laid back than the typical vendor event, but traveling from Chicago I kinda need to have an idea of what to pack.

It will be my first time also, it would be cool if our badges somehow indicated rookies vs veterans at the show. Makes it a little easier to identify other rookies at the show and strike up conversations with them.

I live in Oregon, and one of our largest cities, Portland, has a motto of ‘Keep Portland Weird.’ The town, in which I currently reside, is a much smaller version of that, but still…really weird haha.

In short… NO! We will not be gentle.
Just get on twitter and make sure you search this hashtag #followsam to do some great after hours networking (and don’t forget the company credit card).

Yes, when I was in the Austin airport, those shirts are there as well, but with Austin instead of Portland, of course.

If you have a kilt then you will want to bring it because there is a badge for that. Otherwise dress comfortable (good shoes are a must) and start hydrating now!

I will be a first timer as well. Right now I am having a hard time finding a hotel.

I WISH I was going to be a first timer…
sometimes I hate being an adult.
Yes. Pack light and pack as much extra luggage as you can. I only bring a shirt or two, because you will have access to dozens and dozens.
@kyar6002 as of Friday at 5pm we still had 20+ rooms available at Hyatt Regency ( https://aws.passkey.com/event/11777635/owner/16557/home or call 1.888.421.1442)! Not within walking distance really - but it’s on the SpiceWorld Shuttle route which picks up every 30 min throughout the conference
And at that same time on Friday we had 2 rooms left at the JW Marriott if you want to be within walking distance ( https://aws.passkey.com/event/12124856/owner/11072440/home or call 877-622-3956).

It’s very casual. Lots of short/t-shirts/ sandals. Like I told Todd, if you don’t mind wearing shirts that haven’t been washed, just bring the shirt on your back (and of course pants) because you will be able to get many many more.

To give an example of some of Austin’s weirdness, at my 2nd Spiceworld, I was walking back to the hotel after following SAM to Touches on 6th street. I get near an intersection and hear a “Hello” coming from the trash can. I looked inside it and there was a girl dressed as a cat INSIDE the trash can. She was just randomly telling people Hi as they walked by.

I did see that… Maybe it’s time to invest.

My favorite part of interacting with the GGs is that they bring folks that really know the product. You won’t hear “I’ll get back to you on that” very often. You will be talking to a sales engineer who lives and breathes the product.
