Netcrunch 7 is a great piece of software for any network. I have been using the software for close to 7 years now. At first I would use the software to just let me know when network equipment has gone off-line, but now I used the software to get in-depth reports on hard drive activity, to watching Exchange, to watching my databases and even individual ports on switches. This software has become the first thing I look at in the morning and the last things in the evenings.

I run the software on a VM with Windows Server 2008R2. From the main dashboard I can see at a quick glance all of the networks running and if there are major or minor issues happening. It lists out the servers, networking equipment, printers, and other devices. Then I see a timeline of the past 24 hours and listed out are any alerts that may have come up during each hour, then I can drill down to see what was happening at that moment.

As I look at each IP network it will give me the rundown of the network. I can then explore each network and see each node based on many different layouts. I can see a node that is having issues from it being colored red and others that may colored yellow to tell me that there have been issues, but things are working. If I drill down to a node then I can see all of the individual parts of the system and what is being monitored. With a Windows server you can even see the Windows Services running. If you want to watch a new service you can add almost anything you want to see or create a new one based on your needs.

The great thing about this software is that you can know what is going on from just about anywhere you are at. From just getting E-mails, to text messages and now it also can be accessed through an Internet Browser from any device. Another great feature is its ability to always be watching if a new machine has been added to the network, so that you don’t have to go out and add it to the system, but you can if you want to. Once a new node has been added it will start checking it all out and verify all of the components and what it needs to be monitoring.

For me being a one man shop this software has been invaluable as I can tell when things happen usually before anyone else notices. Netcrunch has earned its spot to stay on my network for a long time and I look forward to each new release as they are always improving the software to meet the needs of today’s networks.

1 Spice up

There are a lot of other NetCrunch features that I could mention here, but needless to say NetCrunch has proven itself to be everything we need and more for our network here at the Municipal Heating Company in Krakow, Poland. We have a very diverse network made up of Aps, servers, Servos, VoIP adapters, and many others – yet monitoring it all with NetCrunch is simple. Physical map layout is simple, and easy to read even for the junior IT members of our team. In the past we also tested the competitor’s program, yet only NetCrunch was able to deal with VMware ESXi servers this easily. The build in reports make it easy to pinpoint problem areas. NetCrunch is definitely worth every penny.

NetCrunch it the best software for monitoring your network I’ve ever seen.
In our customers networks we have multiple system to monitor. Servers, ups, switches, transmission equipment, Voip and all other electronic systems, even automatic-hoover for example.
The best is you can see all of them in one places - live. Their conditions, alerts, bandwidth etc.
NetCrunch is stable, easy use, readable and very intuitive. Also you have many, many options to personalize working with your equipment and you.

I can risk and say that there is no IT hardware on the world which NetCrunch cannot monitor.

With all the responsibility I can recommend it for all administrators who are looking easy to use and stable network monitoring systems.

The setup is very intuitive, and quick - it all just took a few minutes, and we were done. The Dashboard layout makes it easy to manage our network. Our network is made up of a lot of Windows servers, Cisco routers, access points, and Linux machines - so it’s really diverse - yet NetCrunch is able to handle it all. All in all, it’s a real workhorse, we’re just happy with it.
I have been using NetCrunch since version 6. The Dashboards make it easy to manage all the different devices throughout our network locations in different parts of the country, and especially recently with the new widgets. Tech support is quick, and often offers to connect remotely to assist with any configuration, and questions. It also helps that they release new updates about 4 times a year, constantly introducing new things.

Our network is made up of a lot of Cisco devices, and NetCrunch’s build in Nbar support, and the ability to add widgets, and create custom maps of the different locations that we have - just make sense to go with NetCrunch. Also, the build in MiB compiler makes it easy to for us to monitor the generic devices.

Fantastic!

Install is pretty straight forward. The fact that this did not take forever made me very happy. I have used paid network monitors in the past and this one is comparable.

What are the pros?

I love the layout and how you can see everything in the network atlas.

What are the cons?

I am still checking out software and have yet to find anything I don’t like at this time.

It seems to work great

Having grafana support is a major plus to the product. Any way to visualize this type of information and data is extremely helpful. There are alot of services out there that do these tasks, but netcrunch seemed intuitive.

What are the pros?

Simple, intuitive, and feature rich. It looks like the licensing model is not over the top.

What are the cons?

There are several products like this out there, having a linux version would be nice!

Gc Dashboard server

Installation was simple after finding my server address. The smooth style is easy on the eyes once in the dashboard. Other remote tools watchout!

Slick looking interface

I’m currently using PRTG so I’m viewing NetCrunch through that lens. The setup guide that walks you through adding devices is good, shading and highlighting to guide you through the setup. After that though I found the interface unintuitive. Things that looked like links that would take you to a more detailed page instead brought up a pop-up menu.

The information it pulled from Cisco switches via SNMP was accurate but not always useful to me. For example, it warned me that there were 3000 read errors. When I clicked that it took me to a list of the interfaces but did not separate the interfaces with errors from the rest of them, leaving me to scroll through and look at the data for 300 interfaces each individually. There was no color coding that would make a particular interface jump out as having a warning. I liked the port mapping on the details of the switch. With your whole network on there it would be quite useful.

As an aside they price by node, which is a device, as opposed to PRTG which charges by the sensor, or individual field on a device.

Pretty robust software

Very robust monitoring software. Multiple monitoring methods, very easy install and the auto populate (via scan) is pretty spot on. Almost an information overload in all of the options and data provided.

What are the pros?

Easy auto populate of network(s).
Simple install.
Clean interface.

What are the cons?

Upfront pricing would be a plus before I get to attached to the software.
Still testing the software, so nothing too negative at this point.

Great info with minimal effort

I’m impressed. The initial install and setup on a half dozen selected nodes took 30-45 minutes and was done while multitasking on a handful of other things. It covers one ESXI host, 4 VMs a Ubiquity UniFi AP and an HP ProCurve switch.

Very simple install–select the nodes you want to be a part of the “Atlas” and provide authentication creds. and a lot of the rest of the work is done by the installer through discovery. The default monitoring packs were appropriate. Adding others (Exchange, DNS, etc.) were pretty simple to setup.

NetCrunch actually uncovered an Exchange caching issue that we were unaware of.

I really like the UI. My only complaint is that I wish I could squeeze more info in the “Overview” tabs (both Summary and Nodes views). The info is very useful, I just wish I could see more in one screen.

Installing the Console program was simple, the webaccess was automatic. Both give a full view and are consistent. Not many complaints at all, really.

What are the pros?

  • Setup was fast and easy
  • UI is very good.
  • Lots of integration options for notifications
  • Lightweight console app & web option

What are the cons?

Not many so far…

  • Would be nice to auto-detect servers running common services (Exchange) and suggest additional monitoring packs. As easy as the install was, I was almost surprised that it didn’t do this.

Pretty dang good

Nice piece of software for monitoring critical applications. Monitoring my critical APP servers on my vmware setup with extreme ease.

What are the pros?

Easy to install, allows you to set a port for what the web service will run on.

What are the cons?

Would like to be able to run it on IIS natively,
