I am looking for a software monitoring system to monitor network traffic usage by individual devices on the network, in real-time and over a time period. For example, for a small business that has low quality VoIP connection, I would like to monitor the traffic to determine if a device on the network hogging up the bandwidth. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

A couple of my favorites are:

Free: mrtg, cacti, prtg

paid: solarwinds toolset, solarwinds orion

Manage Engine - Netflow Analyzer is a great tool we use on our WAN routers that provides real-time information regarding bandwidth consumption and top-talkers.
We did have Cisco Works but went with Netflow due to the ease of use / deployment and lower $$.

+1 to hsc5775’s links.

Real-time wouldn’t be the recommended option. Rather, good baseline and QoS applied to it will quiesce VoIP latency & jitter to necessary requirements.

You can use Networx. Here is the link NetWorx : bandwidth monitor, connection speed test, data usage log

We’ve come across this recently and it really comes down to what hardware you have and what options it offers for logs of this type.

I’m assuming you’re trying to monitor Internet Traffic and catch people who are eating all the bandwidth? If so one option is to simply mirror the uplink port on your switch and stick a machine running Wireshark on the mirrored port to collect everything that is going via that port.

Other than if you are using a piece of kit that offers NetFlow or sFlow then there are a lot of good analysers out there which can parse these logs and draw all manner of pretty graphs, what switch and router are you running?

Networx helps to filter out LAN traffic. This helps to get exact internet bandwidth getting used by a particular system.

In addition to the paid tools of Engineer’s Toolset and Network Performance Monitor , we also have two free tools that might also meet your needs.
