I have been asking to join a new super market to operate the IT department as a senior , and i have been an IT help desk employee for a year , and the problem is i don’t know how to ask the owners about my requirements and i can’t determine which is the best way to manage this department , i need to answer them soon , so if you could help me with some steps to take and some advises ,

Sounds like a bit more than you can handle if you are lost at what to do, or rather the requirements.

Keep in mind requirements very for every business.

Honesty works best in these situations. Tell them your concerns, but that you are excited for the opportunity.

i am excited for the opportunity , i will work in a fresh environment with new machines less troubles with new technologies , and i am already started studying MCITP and ITIL , i just have to start with them , what i am looking for is where should i start with this opportunity ?!

Use Spiceworks to get an inventory of what it is you are to manage. Then setup the Helpdesk to get the management of user requests under control. Being in Egypt, I would suggest a trip to Germany or England to get training from one of the Spiceworks University Trainers. You can get a list of classes from spiceworksuniversity.com. The class are cheap and will really help get your Spiceworks install up and running.

What sort of problems were you normally dealing with while you were at the helpdesk? Sounds like you’ll end up being right up the top if the others aren’t able to solve issues.

Tell them your challenges, and then hit the library. There’s tons of management books out there. Look around your community, chances are in your social circles, you’ll find folks who are in managment. Many of them, especially if they’re retired, love to mentor people.

Look on line, there’s tons of information there.

Big thing with how you treat the folks working for you, treat them the way you want to be treated, but also let them know that boss spelled backwards is Double s o b. Be honest, be a mentor, respond to their needs, and you’ll get a great department.

Hi Mohamed,

I have been in the Retail Industry as Director of Tech for the past 3 years. Planning network and such ahead of time and having a clear picture of where you are going can save you major headhaches later on.

ITIL and MCITP are great for your tech knowledge but if you are heading the dept. you also need to think of the overall business, operational and financial aspects of IT

If you ever want to have a conversation run some ideas live let me know, we can skype and discuss any concerns you have.
