I want to migrate my old DHCP server to a new DHCP server and im just not seeming to have any luck. The old DHCP server is 2008r2 and its a DC as well. I want to move DHCP and then demote it. But I’ve tried this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-x4s-pNVa8 and it doesnt seem to work. Once we shut down the old one people are not getting new IP addresses. Its really strange. Any ideas or guide would be a huge help.

I’m assuming the IP address on the new DHCP is different than the old? Do your switches or router have an IP Helper? If so, you will need to update that to your new server IP.

I’ll have to check I’m using a Cisco 3850 stack and 2811 router.

So I inherited all my equipment im working with including configs and just recently got appointing to taking over all the switches and routers. I just looked at the ip helper-address and its an address that doesn’t even exist anymore  so that could definitely be why when i switch to the new server IP it doesn’t work

Did you unauthorized the old one and authorize the new one? I just ran into a similar problem on my new migration. Though I made the new one from scratch

Yes I did… and my new one is from scratch as well.

can you define not getting ip addresses:

I assume you mean when a device is powered on it is unable to obtain an ipaddress

Yes when a device is powered on. It does not get an IP address…

So i know it sounded a strange question, but devices that are powered on will try to renew at half life with the old server and will not talk to the new server until the lease is fully expired.

check the logs in the event viewer under application and services log

check the logs in

%windir%\System32\Dhcp.

and analyze
