Contract rates

Ive been doing IT for awhile now working with 3rd party companies on and hourly basis. Also Ive been doing the same for my internal business clients.

I have a company that is asking how much I charge for a monthly contract. Im unsure of what to charge. Client is a lawyer office with approx 6-8 lawyers. Will be managing PC’s and a Windows server.

That depends on alot of factors. Where you operate, what your service actually includes and offers, stuff like that.

My advice, be very clear in your scope of support and set clear guidelines for what you’re including.

My last consulting role was as an MSP. Monthly contracts were per device managed with a minimum number of devices. The plans were all unlimited remote business hours support with additional fees for onsite or after hours work. I’m in a small city so I couldn’t set my rates too high. so it averaged out to about 100-120 per seat per month. I had clear scope of support though that was well outined. I only supported certain software, everything had to be under warranty and have vendor support contracts. I didn’t support anything beyond basic functionality of microsoft products. So I’d fix outlook not sending mail. but I won’t fix your custom excel macro.

Also, set clear contact roles and guidelines. Have one office manager you deal with for service requests. It’ll save you alot of headaches.

Second this - spell out what’s covered. Unless you relish the idea of lawyers yelling at you by phone about their smartphone failing to sync emails 'cause they have no WiFi at the beach somewhere & expect you to remotely fix it for free. On a weekend. “Oh, and my laptop has a virus, you can fix that while you’re connected, right…?”

So, yes, I have worked with lawyers before. Why…?

I agree with them. You have to be very specific about your scope of work and fees, and I would also have something about deadlines depending on level of severity. I would either have one person that enters tickets to you.

Ive worked with 3 lawyers before and 2 of them screwed me over.

Be very careful define the jobs and make the payment part very very clear. If in any isntance they are not paying you do no move forward with doing any work for them
