My office has 20 people and we all use a wired network. We use cable to connect to the internet and get speeds around 90Mbps/30Mbps (according to speedtest). For the office we have 2 unmanaged GB switches and a cisco RV082 Router (i think that gets 10/100)…my question is whether or not to get some better download/upload speeds would it make sense to get a GB Router as well? Any other suggestions anyone can provide? I know the router typically can’t make me faster but it can make me slower!

Well considering you are getting 90 down from the net and that router is giving you 100 down it’s not going to make much of a difference.

90/30 is pretty good for cable, especially 30 up. Is that all you’re looking for, a little more throughput? If you’re just looking at a run of the mill plain Jane router, I doubt a 1Gb interface would make a noticeable difference.

Ya, at this point you’re getting pretty decent cable for a small business. If you’re not seeing an network jams and not planning on adding in any new technologies like cloud hosting, then you’re prolly ok. If the router isn’t showing any problems, I wouldn’t replace it. If you really want to upgrade, a Cisco Meraki MX64 would work for you just fine, and might be easier to see/use. You can get some basic netflow and firewall security with it as well, and then maybe make the decision if you need more bandwidth or not.

It looks like the bottleneck is the cable at the moment, so if you want to improve your speed, you need to upgrade that, and then get a router that can handle the new speed.

One point someone mentioned is Cloudhosting…We have a synology NAS which comes with Cloudstation. That acts as a cloud host so I am seeing a huge drop in the speed at which a new computer receives the sync of 160GB we share out.

Due to some issue with Cloudstation, I’m trying citrix sharefile which actually hosts the share I want to sync to my laptops. Samething, the download is taking forever!!! I’m just trying to get some maxed out speed out of what I have
