I like spiceworks, been using it for about 15yrs now, but I’m so frustrated with the new forum format.
I have howtos I want to write, as I used to (my old articles were not all carried over to the new system, but thats a whole other story).
But I just found out that after a day, the howto becomes locked and I can’t edit it anymore. That was not the case on the old system.

Howtos need to be updatable as they often relate to other products which get updated and therefore the howto needs updating accordingly from time to time.

As it stands I’m gonna have to write my articles on another platform instead.

Please can Spiceworks fix this ?

I responded to your private message about this before I saw this public post, sorry.

In short, it is a global setting and we can’t change it just for how-tos at this time. However, I can edit it for you. That’s the quickest for now.

We can also look into an add-on which allow “wiki” topics. Those would be editable forever, but I just haven’t done enough research on the subject to see if we can limit that to the topic owner or not, which would be appropriate for how-tos, not wikis.

I do want to make some topics wikis… for topics that remain relevant for years, but might need tweaks to remain current, and maybe for other topics where a collaborative answer is better than just one person. However, that’s a long-term goal, so if we go the wiki route for this, it might take a while.

Editing it for me won’t help I’m afraid, as in part its a work in progress.
I’ll find another platform

As you wish.

The answer I gave above is based on the two-year old how-to that you asked about privately. For day-old ones you just have to be Trust Level 2, which you hadn’t gotten to yet, so I bumped you up. But the long-term answer is the same, and totally understand if you feel the need to participate on a different site instead.

Thanks!

I’m interested, just out of curiosity based on your post.

Are the how-to’s for you to later reference or for everyone in the community about topics that often come up?

Just an update on this one… I am doing an experiment and changing a few really old posts that people want to still be editable to a wiki format.

I know that a few other people have wanted this in the past, but I don’t remember who… so if anyone else wants to be part of the experiment, let me know and give me the link to something you want to be editable forever, and we can see how well it works.
