Hello,

I’ve inherited a site where the networking rack is still intact, along with all the wall jacks etc.

One lone patch panel to which I can connect a switch that will be connected to a firewall/router that will be connected to the Internet modem. Whew!!

I’ve never done this particular aspect of the physical layer, would someone please confirm that I have the wiring sequence correct??

That is, patch panel > switch > firewall/router > internet modem

Plus an UPS for everything.

Anyway, could someone tell me what to look for and buy so I can install a rack shelf upon which I can put the Spectrum cable modem, which is not anything that can be racked??

Thank you, Tom

Yes, your sequence is correct.

Just do a Google search for rack-mounted shelf. There are plenty out there that will be fine to hold a modem.

Hey Tom, do you have any information on the rack itself? If you have the specific model, that’ll help drive suggestions on what shelf would work best.

Idk if there’s any brand name information on or about the rack.

But ‘rack-mounted shelf’ is the information I was looking for.

Thank you, everyone!!

While not necessary, in larger organizations there would be patch ports between the switch, firewall/router, and modem for testing and troubleshooting purposes where the equipment does not have webGUI access.

I don’t think it’s that large a setup. It’s JUST a patch panel…for a 5-room building suite. Thank you, Tom
