I am trying to install Win Server 2022 Remote Desktop Services Cals(5 Device) on to a Windows Server 2012r2 as they are supposed to be backwards compatible, but am running into the error below.
If appears from this Microsoft link that the cals should be backwards compatible.

What type of license are you adding. Per user, per device?

Can you confirm the key is correct.

Per Device, if you mean have I typed the key incorrectly then yes I can confirm it is typed correctly.

Your license server must be of Server 2022 or later in this instance. The access can grant access to 2012r2

I believe we were looking at the chart incorrectly. We are ordering new 2012r2 device cals now.

Why would you still be using 2012 anyway, if you’re building new hosts, move the licensing server.

I think you misunderstand the backwards compatibility part too.

Your license server is backwards compatible with older licenses, not your newer licenses being compatible with older servers.

Not least one that’s been out of support over a year.

Huh, isn’t your host going to be 2022?

Nope, the host and vm’s are all server 2012r2. I believe my boss bought a server 2022 cals was because he thought it would be backwards compatible.
