Our ye olde Server 2003 Server died with an LTO2 tapedrive in it which we just occasionally used for recovering old archive stuff that went missing.

We have a Dell Powervault LTO4 machine going spare which we inherited but never put to use as it’s a beast of a device and just so not convenient for backups and recovery compared to hard disks IMO.

As Server 2008R2 and SBS2011 doesn’t really do tape by default, does anyone know of a cheap as chips bit of software so i can get to make use of the LTO4 tape drive to recover the occasional bit of data from our old LTO2 tapes???

Thanks!

hmm nearly, i do remember this from when NTBackup was dropped but wasn’t sure if it would read tapes as the .bkf files i actually had used it on were on disk back in the day when i did need to use NTBackup recovery on something Vista/Server 2008-ish.

The process described in the link you offer does not work for Server 2008R2 flavours of OS but there is an actual installer from here: Description of the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2 - Microsoft Support

Boo - just found out the Dell Powervault tape drive we have seems able to use just about every LTO tape version going except <=LTO2… Looks like I’ll be reinstalling the ye olde server :frowning:
