Hi All

Can anyone recommend reverse proxy software? Linux/Windows… thinking of using IIS, not sure thou…

There a lot of solutions out there. What are you trying to get out of the reverse proxy? Would CloudFlare help (it’s not software, but a cloud service)? What about something like Varnish?

You can also set up load balancers, if that’s what you need?

We are implementing a new mobile solution for some of our users and the mobile application vendor recommended a reverse proxy (I initially thought of using VPN but I don’t think this is a viable option.)

I am thinking of having VM Win12 box with IIS acting as our reverse proxy inside our Cisco ASA firewall and then VMware firewall between the box and our network… just a rough plan at the minute…

Like the sound of using a cloud base reverse proxy, will investigate…

If your vendor recommended a reverse proxy setup, I’d ask them what they would recommend you use. Chances are that they have done this before and know exactly what you need and how you should set it up.

Yep, I did, and the answer was “up to you, no preference required on our side” nice… but I am going to speak to the technical engineer and see if i can get more info…

Do you use CloudFlare for reverse proxy? if so is there any lag? the number of users using it would be about 15…

We have a number of solutions for web server reverse proxies.

We use Cloudflare on a large number of websites, as it also provides a number of DoS protection tools and other anti-hack attack solutions, which are great for the price you pay.

We also have some servers that run Varnish, again as a website reverse proxy solution.

So I’m not sure if that’s what you need for your mobile solution.

Hm, that’s not helpful at all. I’d definitely nudge them. If they’re any good, they should be able to give some advice, even if they don’t want to be seen to recommend or endorse any specific solution.

Thanks for recommending CloudFlare, I am going to give them a try but hope you don’t mind if I run this pass you?

I have created a subdomain within our 123-Reg account and I have created a A record that will point back to our Web Server back at HQ.

So I need to add the subdomain into CloudFlare, for the reverse proxy to work? if this is correct is there a howto from CloudFlare to do this? cant seem to find one…

At the minute I have the free account with CloudFlare but panning to purchase the pro package…

I will also be purchasing a SSL certificate from 123-reg for the subdomain…

CloudFlare takes over the DNS for your domain. You can create any records from within CloudFlare.

So if your domain is mydomain.com and you want to create a website, you’d setup an A record for www.mydomain.com and probably also mydomain.com to point to the IP of your web server.

In CloudFlare you’d create one A record as www and another A record as (empty) both with the IP address of your web server.

If you have a subdomain, for example sub.mydomain.com and you want to create an A record within that, that works pretty much the same. So if you want a web server at www.sub.mydomain.com , you’d create the two A records.

In CloudFlare you’d create www.sub and sub and point them both to the same IP address.

CloudFlare has to handle the DNS for your whole domain, including the sub domains - as far as I recall. It handles everything from within the same DNS control section.
