We have been doing a lot of technician dispayches lately which can be a challenge in a very small department. In the past we had 3-4 times the helpdesk staff we have now so the answer was always just send a person or two. I am interested in a shift to remote support even though we are in the same building as most of our users. I would appreciate any recommendations from the community.

My requirements are:

  1. User must be able to see what the tech is doing

  2. User must be able to perform actions for the tech to see

  3. Must be secure in a LAN environment

My preferences are:

  1. No client installation required

  2. Freeware

TeamViewer is good and its free

RealVNC (realvnc.com) and UltraVNC(uvnc.com) are free too. They don’t have the ability to traverse a firewall like TeamViewer, but if your on a local network, that is not much of a problem. They do require a client install though.

Looks interesting, but free for non-commercial use only :frowning:

If it’s a Windows based LAN, you can use Remote Assistance…

Can’t believe you’ve not considered LogMeIn Free , is there something you don’t like about it?

I had missed the free version, I have used Pro in a couple of scenarios and it has worked well.

It’s quite good, I recommend it. You can’t drag-n-drop transfer files or share sounds etc, but it’s enough for basic IT support/troubleshooting.

FYI logmein free is not for commercial use!

We use TightVNC but again it needs a client!

We use UltraVNC here. Its free, very easy to use, and in a pinch, you can even run “fastpush” to remotely install. Not really necessary if you’re all in the same building. I’ve had to reinstall remotely before. Windows Defender would see it as a threat and sometimes disable it - that was before Windows Defender was given a proper burial (from our network/pc’s). Can be gotten from Download UltraVNC: Remote Support Software, Remote Support tool,Remote Desktop Control, Remote Access Software, PC Remote Control Probably has all you need:

actions can be viewed by both parties,

input from both parties (sometimes NOT a good thing, hehe)

free

remote install (fastpush) available (found here @ dark age ) or sourceforge, search fastpush, i’m unfamiliar with that installer.

cons: it does need a client install - even if remotely done.

Edit: Admin Note: Fastpush.zip has been reported to contain malware. This has not been confirmed by the Spiecworks team.

Thanks for the heads up. Since I am the author of the ‘No Non-Commercial Only Software’ policy I need to follow it.

Where does it say so??

He failed

It appears you can use it at work:

“We also do not place any restrictions on commercial use of LogMeIn Free, so you can use it at home or at work.”

It wasn’t ment to start another slagging match! it was meant in the humouras way please dont attack me!

Yes, I thought I saw somewhere that you could use it for work as well, thanks for finding it, Andy.

Still, let’s all gather up and attack Andy, he loves it really… =)

Only in the water cooler

There are lots of post attacking me one about porn… carry on this bit there :stuck_out_tongue:

For now… back to topic…

Second vote for logmein free also love purgos if on same lan, it will install vnc for you and allow one click connections

I’m a huge fan of logmein as well but you’ll have tell me where the one click connections are I haven’t seen anywhere to do that.

Chris Control is an awesome product, it remotely will install VNC if you uncheck RDP. It can be laggy on updating especially when typing but overall great product.

I would suggest you look at Purgos (free). It meets your criteria, and has added functionality.

I love log me in and use it for private clients, friends and my home computers… but for a work environment I am a little more careful (ie. web account with access to multiple office workstations).

Sorry, people, wasn’t trying to mis-inform or cast aspertions!!

I think they may have changed their policy! Either that or I’m going nut’s which is also a distinct possibility.

Logmein is a great product!

akp982 - seriously you’re gonna have to try harder if you want to insult me, that wasn’t an invitation btw!!
