I’ve done alot of IT support in an informal roll for friends and family and various other places I’ve worked,
But this is my first job in the formal IT position.

I’m managing about 20 people on a local network and supporting a few others that work remotely.

Are there any professional certification that y’all would recommend that I get?

I was considering CompTia’s A+ for starters.

Hi jasonkoller!

CompTIA A+ is an excellent starting point, as well as Network+. Those two are going to be your foundation certifications that you should get prior to anything else. Then after you are done with those you can break out into specialized areas/brands, Microsoft, Cisco, etc.

QuickCert IT Training offers over 300 online IT training courses taught by industry experts. Our CompTIA A+ and Network+ courses start out at only $99 each for 6 months access. We also have the option to purchase +PRO PACKS , or live labs and e-books with your courses to give you that extra hands-on learning.

Here is a quick breakdown of the major certifications and tracks available: http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/5873-how-to-get-certified . It really comes down to what you want to do. What do you enjoy about IT, networks, servers, helpdesk, etc.?

Jason,

I agree with Kacia. The CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications are a great start for new IT pros. Do you have any specific interests? Meaning, are you interested in security, virtualization, networking, VoIP? These interests might help guide your path for your future IT career.

But for now, you should focus on A+ and Network+. At CBT Nuggets, we have training that covers all of the topics and the CompTIA certifications . Check us out with our 7-day free trial and see if we would be a good fit. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!
