Hey guys, due to COVID19, we are being forced to consider allowing folks to work from home. We are not against this but not exactly prepared either. The bulk of our workforce uses desktop computers in a traditional “cube farm”. We do have a VPN access for management employees with company issued laptops. The questions is, how do we allow our workforce to work from home during this crisis? (a permanent solution is talk for another day)

One of the things we are considering is standing up a Remote Desktop Gateway (Server 2016 probably) and then setup a resource group for each PC on the floor, and then allow only that person to access their own PC remotely through the gateway. Given that I have not experience with this particular product, is this doable? And if so, is it secure? Additional licensing to do this? Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.

There is always additional licensing muahahahahaha

Yes you could set up RDP on each of the workstations and they would be able to RDP into their own workstation. Create a desktop icon for them with their login credentials

" Create a desktop icon for them with their login credentials " This puzzles me. Can you elaborate? Are you saying to setup an icon on their home computer for convenience? If so, I was just going to give them a set of instructions of how to run the RDP client and login. Or am I missing something?

Any idea what licenses are needed and their costs?

No idea on cost but if both computers and the file server are Windows Pro or higher then they come with RDP

Yes I was suggesting to set up an icon for their convenience but if they are competent enough to follow instructions then I want your job because users where I come from are not lmao

Yes. I assume that the domain CALS that are already in place cover the user connecting via RDP to their OWN dedicated workstation. I’m guessing MS will want an additional RDG/RDS license for them to use the gateway to do it because, well,… Microsoft… Ive never setup the RDG but it seems like there is a place in there where we have to add licenses?
