Logmein alternative Software

Hi all, We want to use a VNC solution instead of paying for something like Logmein. We use ChunkVNC which runs of ultravnc for 1 click support and it works great. Idealy we want the same method but for permanent server access. The chunkvnc does not work well with this. It uses the ultravnc repeater for access over port 443 so we dont need to port forward. Is there any way to set up ultravnc server the same way but have it run even if the server is rebooted?

BeAnywhere as a logmein replacement Networking

With the recent price increases at Logmein we are looking at switching services. So far I really like the beanywhere product. It includes both rescue based support and an unattended client. The client applet also has built in ticketing system for users to create quick support requests. I saw a few recommendations here but there was not a lot of info. I'm looking for more reviews of the software and how the company handles issues when they are brought to them. @GoTo

I would go with TeamViewer.
ScreenConnect can also be a nice alternative.
Overall, depends upon your requirement.
Though, if you need to manage the tasks within network, Lepide remote admin tool should also be an ideal for you. It’s available free and helps to get complete access to control as many endpoints as you require through a centralized platform.

I would second that and say TeamViewer is a great alternative to LogMeIn! Our remote access tools let you support, assist, interact, and collaborate with people, exchange information and access and use technology. With TeamViewer, you have everything you need right in front of you.

We just switched from Screenconnect to Teamviewer then back to Screenconnect again. Screenconnect is much better than Teamviewer.

Absolutely. I currently have access to both so I’ll walk you through my process of connecting to the same user both ways:

Screenconnect - I open the website (local server with relay to outside) and login with my AD credentials (bonus points). I click “access” and see a list of every computer I manage. I type the first few letters of the user’s last name into the search box (major bonus points) and the list of computer names is narrowed to just a few. By clicking on the computer’s name I can see the user is currently logged in, for how long, and view a recent screenshot. I click “Join” and in 3 seconds I’m in control and can see all 3 screens simultaneously. I do my business and quit. Done.

Teamviewer - I open the website (cloud based service) and enter the username and password for my teamviewer account (not synced to AD). I then click “I am not a robot” and am forced to select 3 images with street signs and click “login.” I see a list of computer names (I already know the computer name as I just finished connecting through Screenconnect, but normally I’d have to ask the user for it) and type in the first few letters of the computer’s name. I can’t see any information about the computer before I join except that the computer is online. I click “Connect” and am prompted for the computer’s teamviewer password (which we set to all be the same) and enter it. I’m now in control and can see one of the user’s screens. To view one of the other screens I have to manually select it. I do my business and quit. Teamviewer helpfully (sarcasm) pops up a window asking me how my experience was. I can close it without filling it out but it happens every, single, time. I close the stupid survey window and I’m done.

It’s not that Teamviewer doesn’t work, it does. It’s a bunch of little things that add up to one product being noticeably better than the other. To the point we went back to Screenconnect even after purchasing a year of Teamviewer.

Another annoyance is that Teamviewer isn’t smart enough to recognize when a computer’s name changes. This wouldn’t normally be a major problem but we recently had to change our naming convention and it caused chaos in Teamviewer. It also has an annoying screen the end-user has to click through the first time they login to Windows.

And you are right, Teamviewer is cheaper.

We had a teamviewer license and screenconnect backed into labtech (when it came out), it’s a great product but the company behind it meh… bad aftertaste.

Yes, this is what initially caused us to switch to Teamviewer. We switched back when they recently agreed to update our existing license to the most recent version for a flat rate instead of forcing us to go with the crazy expensive plan. If you have an existing license you might want to talk to them again…unless you’re happy with Teamviewer.

The new SC license costs are kinda crazy. Fortunately anyone who had existing on-prem licensing are safe (for now). Our renewal for 2 concurrent techs was basically $150 and I believe I can buy another concurrent tech license at our original price.

As long as SC doesn’t change our pricing, we’ll stick with the product as it’s been nothing short of awesome.

That reddit thread has a rather amusing, and horribly confused conversation regarding the security of VNC vs things like SC and bomgar…

I have been using LogMeIn Central for a few years and just switched to RemoteToPC a couple weeks ago. It does all I need to do that I was able to do in LogMeIn and a few things that I do not require. The response time for support emails I have sent has been typically within an hour and that includes ones sent after 10:00 pm. As an added bonus, it is costing me less then half of LogMeIn.

We are using RemoteToPC after the disappointment with logmein concerning the prices. RemoteToPC is affordable and has great basic management tools, like monitoring CPU, memory consumption, disk usage and up-time of a PC / server.

On https://remotetopc.com you can ask for a Trial License. For only 299,- a year you will get File Transfer functions, Remote Desktop Access, Enhanced Monitoring & Alerts (by mail or via text messages), Unlimited Concurrent Sessions and User Management for 100 Remote Computers.

RemoteToPC is “between LogMein and Teamviewer”. The alert service with Heartbeat monitoring is great! You will get instant messages in case of problems, you will be notified in case of emergency (internet down) and the pricing is good.

We still have a few whishes for the future: Wake-On-Lan would be great, perhaps more monitoring tools, but we are more than satisfied with the product. By the way: their service in case of problems is great: within 1 hour you will get an answer in case of “troubleshooting” ! I would give it a try, when you are tired of paying more and more to companies like logmein.

I’ve used LMI for years, first Pro then most recently as LMI-Central/25, and our price history for Central has been: 2013 free, 2014 $162. 2015 $399, 2016 $499, 2017 $599. I’ve always thought that was highway-robbery price increases.

I’ve also tried the free version of TeamViewer and it’s OK. Maybe not the quality of LMI? It seems that TeamViewer Basic would do roughly what LMI-Central does, and it costs $849 one-time? So after 2 years, we’d come out ahead.

But is the TeamViewer license really perpetual? Does it allow you to upgrade to the latest version of TV for years to come? No downstream costs? For sure??

p.s. Splashtop Basic looks intriguing also! $199/yr would probably do us.

If you are still looking, you might find real user reviews for LogMeIn and all the other major remote access solutions on IT Central Station to be helpful.

As an example, this user writes in his review of LogMeIn Rescue, “It will save you money and time. There is one feature that LMI has that I haven’t found good alternative yet for but would love to. That is the “users” option. I have about 225 customers PC’s in LMI central. About 35 of them log in to their own PC’s from time to time. I give them access through LMI so they can see just the computers I let them. Are there any other programs that have a similar feature? My sub is set to renew in September so if I can find something else, I have plenty of time to test and switch.
