Afternoon spice heads! We are currently in the process of looking in to new firewall options. Our current Sonic Walls are reaching end of life. I’ve been checking out Cisco’s ASA 5506-X with FirePower. Does anyone have any feedback on this particular device?

Sad sad, I’d look into a newer Sonicwall Model.
I mean Cisco’s ASA are pretty neat after all.
Maybe also look into Fortinet.
What are your requirements? UTM, what size, bandwidth?
Currently we are running TZ210’s and TZ200’s.

You can never go wrong with an ASA. They are solid and fantastic devices. However, prepare for a heck of a learning curve.
I prefer pfsense or fortigate because they are easier but just as solid.
The nice thing about the ASA is that at any point in time, there are 100,000 other IT people having the exact same problem you are.

Why are you switching away from Sonicwalls? Why not just contact a Dell sales rep and get an upgrade price to a newer Sonicwall?
I am a Sonicwall fan myself. If you know then and are comfortable with them go to a newer model.
If you are set on moving on to something else Forinet, Sophos, Cyberroam is probably where I would start

+1 for sticking with Sonicwall if you’ve been happy with them–our NSA250m has been rock solid so far. That said, Sonicwall support seems to have taken a turn for the worse, so I avoid dealing with them whenever possible…
Next firewall for us will most likely not be a Sonicwall, in truth, so I’ll be taking a good look at Fortinet and probably Juniper.
We were recently in the same boat. We switched to Sophos.

Replaced a Sonicwall for a customer with Sophos recently. Would have used another Sonicwall but they priced themselves out of the running for models with enough throughput for my needs.
UTM vendors seem WAY behind the times with upgrading their models to support the bandwidth most business have available to themselves cheaply these days.

Right before I left my last job, we evaluated Sophos as a possible replacement for Sonicwall, and really loved their product features and support. We were going to move forward with that, but I left before we deployed them to our clients.
fortigate vote from me. really solid product and support team has been great from all levels.
I would recommend take a look at cyberoam Next Gen firewall appliances, Much better feature and very easy learning curve and deployment, We have an on-appliance plug and play reporting capablities that allow you to understand who is doing what in the network. Application intelligent with an amazing QOS (Bandwidth Management Capablities), We can schedule a Demo of cyberoam for 30 mins. So that you will understand the capablities of the product before you make your choice.

I managed Sonicwalls for 11 years (XPRS models through NSA2400s). They WERE great and HAD excellent support. Switched to Fortigate. I have only had to call support once and it went just fine.
