Hello,

I have one domain controller running Server 2012 R2. Group policies are not working. When I attempt to open Group Policy Management Console, I immediately get a pop up that says “The system cannot find the path specified” Then any group policy I click on, it says the same message. In event viewer on the DC, I keep getting Event ID 1058 every 5 minutes. When I attempt to browse to the sysvol path, there is no policies folder. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check the health of AD - run DCDIAG on the domain controller from an elevated command prompt and look for errors.

Also check the configuration and health of your DNS infrastructure.

Are you able to access any of the other AD tools?

If no, then check if the server’s IP settings are using itself as DNS.

Here are the results of DCDIAG. I checked the health of the DNS configuration and it’s fine. I can access all other AD tools. Yes primary DNS is pointing to itself.

To give an update. I know what happened. About a year ago I did a migration from SBS 2011 to Server 2012 R2. I thought everything replicated over and I dcpromo the SBS 2011 and took it offline. It looks like the group policies for existing users are cached on their local machines because although the policies are gone, it’s still working for them. Of course I don’t have a backup of the SBS server before it was a domain controller so I can’t restore the group policies.

I found a Microsoft tool to rebuild the SYSVOL and default group policies, however that won’t help me with the custom ones I created. Is it possible to view the cached group policies on the local workstations? This would be helpful so I know what configurations to set when I create new ones.
