I’ve been tasked with finding a more robust solution to our environment monitoring for our data centre (three racks) with the only constraint being it must be rack mountable and have the capability to send out SMS alerts. I’ve been looking at the Poseidon 4002 and was wondering whether anyone was currently using one, what their thoughts were and what else you spiceheads are using.

4 Spice ups

Check out ITWatchDogs.

They have all kinds of solutions from low budget to anything you will want or need.

EDIT: I am not affiliated with them, we just use their stuff. It works and is reasonably priced.

1 Spice up

I use WeatherGoose from ITWatchdogs.com

They have since added more models. The one I ordered was 8 years ago and still works fine.

Not too sure about your Poseidon but I would also recommend AVTech.

Also not affiliated with them…

Third for ITWatchDogs!

We use the RelayGoose Vertiv Geist™ Environmental Monitoring

In addition to triggering alerts and keeping logged data, it can also close relays to activate other devices. Ours controls three 24V activated relays which energize exhaust fans as well as blowing in outside air (filtered of course!) when the temp outside is cool and dry, which the goose knows thanks to a sensor run out to the building soffit.

Also they are in this community. I asked them about a feature request a while back and they came back and said it sounded like a great idea. Two months later my request was in the firmware update.

I’ve seen some that have relays that can power-on certain equipment in the event that a threshold is met, like powering a backup AC if the temperature gets too hot. That is pretty awesome.

If you’re looking for Spiceworks integration, there’s THUM. Very inexpensive, with a Spiceworks dashboard panel.

In disclosure, I haven’t had a chance to use one…my request to central IT to buy one went ignored, even after the server room went up into the 100s when I accidentally bumped the thermostat and turned off the AC! (Facilities bought a thermostat cover, which I ended up installing on my own a month later…Maybe central IT thought that was enough…)
