OK, what server address do I need and in what format?

I have access to my helpdesk externally at http:helpdesk.companyname.com/portal, how to I put that into my agent configuration or what else do I need to do different to get the agent to work?

Is HTTPS forwarded from the border firewall to the internal server as well? The agent communicates over HTTPS, so it would be either https://helpdesk.example.com or https://helpdesk.example.com:PORT if not on 443.

I do not think we have HTTPS set up for it, so the answer would be get HTTPS set up in order to use the agent.

Yes, I’d advise forwarding that port. Spiceworks has a self-signed cert that will be sufficient for the agent, but you can also use your own certificate if you already have one.
