Hi

I have created a shared folder on Windows server 2019 but user can’t access the folder from the PC it shows error “server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.”

  • I have setup domain users full permission on the folder shared

  • I have setup the proper permission for the users on the Security

  • Server and the PCs are on the same domain and same network subnet.

But still the user can’t access the folder. The user can access the shared folder if only I add the domain user ID on the local admin group on the server where I created the shared folder which is supposed to be not required to shared a folder.

This is the first time I am doing it on Windows 2019 and I am facing this issue. I never had this issue on 2012 and 2016. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello @sazzadbh . If you don’t mind clarifying something. You have given Share permission everyone “full control” and security (NTFS) access to that user, correct?

@professionalgoogler yes, this is correct. Share permission everyone “full control” and security (NTFS) access to that user.

Sorry sazzad. There was supposed to be more text on my first message. This sounds like a case of permissions being wrong. If you have to give admin root access to the server for him to be able to log on, it seems like there is something denying access. Users have to be able to navigate the folder structure. If both ntfs and share permissions are enabled, the most restrictive permissions apply. Maybe check to see if a higher directory than the share has its permissions wrong? Other than that, the only thing i can think of is if a GPO for accessing the computer from the network is enabled, and only allows access to admins.

Other things you can check are the credentials being wrong via windows credential manager. I had one particular scenario where it was causing a similar issue.

There is no issue with the credential. Trying adding multiple users from multiple PCs. It gives same error

Is the Firewall enabled in Windows and any chance you have it set to only allow administrators access on port 135, 139, etc?

@seanmdit I have tried changing the firewall settings. Even tried disabled the whole firewall setting but it behaves the same way. Also tried disabled Antivirus but no luck.

If you go to security > advanced everything look good, any deny actions set?

If you could show any pictures that would be great bud. If multiple users are having the same issue, then yeah I’d definitely lean more towards permissions or policies being restrictive. Either way, the more details the better.

Also, and I ask only because I’ve seen this before, but the comps are connected to the domain, correct? Haha

There is no deny access

This issue is related to permission settings. If I add the domain user ID on the local server administrator group user can access the folder from the PC. But I can’t add domain users on the local server admin group. I am trying to figure out if there is something different in Windows 2019 compare to 2012 and 2016.

To my knowledge no difference I am running Windows 2019 file servers along with a test 2022 server and nothing has changed from what I can tell.

File sharing is turned on for the domain?

@seanmdit do you mean on the File server where is the shared folder or on the domain controller server? This is enable on the File server but not enable on the domain controller.

you check if your windows server has network discovery available (Open Windows Explorer and click on network to see if you see those PC) and it will ask if network discovery is on. Check if from those PC you can ping the Ip of that server.

Yes the file server

Network discovery is on the server and on the client PC. It is disable on DC. There is no issue to ping each other. Even if I add the domain user account on the File server local admin group user can access the shared folder from the PC. That means something related to permission on network security settings.

The message states that “the user hasn’t been granted the requested logon type at this computer”.

That sounds like the affected users don’t have “Access this computer from the network” permission under Group Policy.
