Siemens tech walked in yesterday to start the upgrade process of converting our America Dynamics DVR from Xp to Win7. First thing he says is why do I need to upgrade from xp?
Well that just happens to be our company’s policy.
Then he let’s slip that he has never done this before, but he has support’s number just in case.
So I had made screen shots of all setting and have done a full backup of the OS. in preparation of this.
After 2 hours he had been on the phone most of the time with America Dynamics
tech support, and reported that he can’t do anything because our service licese has expired and needed to be renewed before America Dynamics will give him the path to download the required drivers.
So as soon a finance approves the funding to get the license renewed I get to go through all this again.
Sigh.

His question about XP would’ve had my Spidey Sense tingling straight away. He seems like one of those script kids who can follow a linear path, but he gets totally lost with any deviations.
This would definitely make me feel uncomfortable.

If he has never done this before, you should have just shown him out and told him you know how to call support, wonder if he had anything to do with the licensing.

It’ll be fine. Just tell him to keep clicking until it works!

Never goes well when the first question is why do we need to upgrade -.- SMH
We have a policy that we don’t work on third party equipment. That is why we pay for the onsite support contracts.

I know a company that was running an automation system for manufacturing something or another. One of their machines ran off of a PC that ran WindowsXP. The quote to upgrade to Windows7 was $50k from the vendor because they hadn’t built an image for 7 yet. I wanted to badly offer my services at $49k because I’m guessing there wasn’t much worked involved in porting over apps and drivers to 7.

Funny how the support licensing wasn’t an issue when you called to set up the appt, but it was once the tech came onsite.
