Corrupted and unplayable video files are a fairly common problem faced by many GoPro owners. In most cases, such video files contain video and audio streams, but cannot be played due to corrupted metadata.

This usually happens when the video recording process is unexpectedly interrupted (for example, if the battery is suddenly depleted and the camera loses power before you can stop the recording process).

Without getting into technical details, there is a tool that allows you to repair GoPro video files by restoring their corrupted metadata and indexes.

The tool works online, so you need to register for a free account, then upload your corrupted MP4 file and follow the instructions to repair it. To register an account, go to this site: Restore.Media

After your GoPro video is repaired, be sure to check the preview before downloading the file. There shouldn’t be any glitches or freezes.

It is also important to use the correct sample file. A sample is a playable MP4 file recorded with the same GoPro camera and the same settings as the corrupted file. Restore.Media will use the sample file to extract the metadata needed to fix the corrupted video.

If the video has not been fixed, you can ask Restore.Media engineers to manually check the problem.

Another way to repair GoPro videos is to use a built-in feature called “SOS”. Few people realize that this feature is available in almost all GoPro models. Not as effective as the tool mentioned above, but in some cases, it can still help recover GoPro files.

If you are unable to play the file recorded on the GoPro, you can try to restore it using this function. Below you will find instructions on how to do this in various GoPro cameras:

Power off you GoPro camera.

Remove the battery from the camera.

Remove the MicroSD card from the camera.

Insert the battery only back and power on the camera.

Insert the MicroSD card back and then press any button.

The camera will scan the MicroSD card for known files. If it finds a corrupted video, you will see one of the following icons / notifications on your GoPro’s screen:

“REPAIRING FILE” notification Note: the icon / notification type depends on your GoPro model.

If you see any of these icons / notifications, press ANY BUTTON on the camera and it will fix the video. During the file repairing process the icon / notification should blink repeatedly.

Once the file is repaired, the camera’s LCD screen will return to its normal state.

Power off your GoPro camera.

Remove the MicroSD card.

Power on the camera.

Insert the MicroSD card back and then press any button.

The camera will scan the MicroSD card.
