Long time scripter, first time programmer here. It took me far too long to pick up PowerShell because I could typically do what I needed faster with VBScript and/or DOS commands (and yes, I mean DOS and not CMD). Now that I’ve started natively using PowerShell, I’m finding a need to make and update things made in C# and .Net. I can hold my own with most of it, but I need some clarity on a few things.

What’s the logic behind NuGet names? For example, if a package like Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Storage is deprecated, does that mean Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Storage.Queue is also deprecated?

What is “refactoring” and how do you do it in Visual Studio 2022? For that matter, any resources for teaching someone who already understands loops, logic, objects, etc, but not inheritance, models, covariance and other things not used when making a batch file? Heck, any great resources for teaching me how to use Visual Studio (Its slightly more complicated than PowerShell ISE and Notepad++)??

I’ll attempt to answer at least some of your questions:

  • NuGet names
    • The package name can be anything. The class naming in the package will follow a certain pattern, but there’s not necessarily any logic. It all depends on the names of the different namespaces used by the original developer. It can be anything.
  • Deprecation
    • It depends. You can mark one package, one namespace, one class, or one property/method in a specific class as deprecated. Usually, if a namespace is deprecated, anything underneath it will also be deprecated since logically they are part of the deprecated “unit”.
  • Refactoring
  • Refactoring simply means that you are either renaming stuff or rewriting stuff. It could be standardizing your namespaces, classes and properties names, or just rewriting a part of the code to be more efficient or look more pretty. Most IDEs have tools to help you with this. VS can rename code elements and replace the references in the different code files of the loaded projects for you.

Regarding learning resources, you might try something like PluralSight for an object-oriented programming course. That would be your best bet for a structured learning curriculum outside of an actual class. You might also be able to find some tutorials floating on the internet, but I don’t have any handy at the moment. Depending on which version of Visual Studio you use, Microsoft offers documentation and guides you can use to get familiar with the software: Visual Studio product family documentation | Microsoft Learn .
