Today in History: 2000
The Recording Industry Association of America was after Napster ever since the site came online. It was the promotion of illegally searching and downloading music and sometimes video. In 2000, Judge Marilyn Hall Patel issued a preliminary injunction against Napster, ordering the company to cease operations by July 28th.
The Funnies:
On the Menu Today - Mojitos!
As I’ve had about 3 hours sleep and can’t function properly, and FrostWolf requested Mojito talk, I decided I’d run with it.
It’s something that doesn’t normally appeal to me as I don’t like rum that much. That being said I’ve had a mojito twice in the recent past. Both of these occasions were at someone’s house rather than a bar, so I expect I probably haven’t had the best mojito experience.
What I can say, despite my dislike of rum, is that it was actually fairly tasty and incredibly refreshing. As Frostwolf pointed out, it’s absolutely a summer drink. Maybe it’s one I need to go to a cocktail bar and try, perhaps then I’ll appreciate it more.
What I don’t agree with is the canned mojitos. Thankfully I’ve never had one, but I can’t imagine they’re that nice? Surely not? Nor will they be that refreshing. Given how simple it is to make a mojito, there’s no real excuse not to. Unless maybe you’re camping or somewhere where you can’t readily get at the ingredients. But in that situation why a mojito? Go for a beer or something. I’m ranting now.
Given the current heat in the UK, maybe I should go and have one? Free Saturday, that might be my plan! If you’re interesting in making one, here’s a fairly standard recipe.
Happy Thursday everyone!

Today is the 18th anniversary of me starting work for my first .dot com company. Back in 2000 I was working for an incubator and we had 20 or so .dot com startups using our offices and kit. One of them offered me the position of IT manager which I took and since then my work life has been a real roller coaster. Long live July 26th!

Never been the biggest fan of cocktails, expensive and fiddly for little reward. Rather have a nice cold one in this heat or a decent cider over ice.
I remember when Napster disappeared, suddenly everyone was talking about Limewire, Kazaa, Direct Connect, Gnutella etc. Virus central

I don’t drink, but everything I know about mojitos I learned from Bruce Campbell in Burn Notice.

I don’t mind a good rum based drink. Since my wife likes fruity drinks, I got to taste quite a few concoctions with rum as a base. They’re dangerous since you don’t even realize how much alcohol you’re taking in. But nowadays, I stick to a max of one decent beer per night. Seems like the easiest way to lose weight.

Not really a mojito fan, give me beer or a long island.
I remember downloading music videos off napster and getting all excited when the source was “cable.” I still had dialup at the time, phone wouldn’t ring for days lol.

I’m a fan of mojitos. I don’t make them often, but I do have a bunch of mint in the garden (I do enjoy a good herb!), and I do have some rum in the cabinet ** tiny light bulb forming **
I also enjoy the mojito’s Brazilian cousin, the caipirinha, which is a bit more aggressive and gives you more bang for buck. But as ckcoder mentioned, I also don’t drink much anymore since that’s probably the easiest thing to cut out if you’re looking to be healthy. If I do drink now, it’s often whiskey on the rocks … no added sugar.

Hey, thanks, BritishCrumpet!
I find that the rum isn’t overpowering a good Mojito, and the crispness of the mint makes it a great summer beverage. It’s not that I don’t like craft beer (love it), or other drinks, but some drinks are absolutely off the menu for me above a certain temperature, and this is a refreshing alternative.
One should never get a canned mojito. That’s like using instant coffee shudder.

The best we could get (due to piss poor copper in our area, thanks ATT) was a 33.6kbps connection, so yeah pretty much anything was 5-10 min lol. I remember the day we got cable internet, 4 mpbs down 512k up, the world was never the same…
Now i get pissy that comcast “ONLY” bumped the blast tier up from 150 mbps to 170 mbps for free from what was 75 mbps about a year or so ago around here.
Long islands in the right quantity make you forget a lot of things, they are great for work functions!
Love that XKCD, but if you literally want to see that crazy guy’s head explode, point out that Websters and every other dictionary is fine with it.

Have to say, I prefer a good Old Fashioned with Makers Mark. Now that’s a good drink!

Cindy Crawford? Youngsters… In my day, we had to sneak a peek at the Cheryl Tiegs poster at the poster store in the mall.
