1961: First man in space

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. Gagarin orbited Earth aboard Russian spacecraft Vostok 1, remaining in space for an hour and 48 minutes before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. Gagarin was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union award, the highest Soviet honor.

Gagarin never returned to space, though he was backup crew on the Soyuz 1 mission that ended in a fatal crash. Gagarin died in 1968 when the MiG-15 jet he was piloting crashed outside Moscow. It is reported that Gagarin was training for a return to space at the time of his death.

On the Menu Today

It’s National Grilled Cheese Day, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been pre-celebrating nearly every afternoon for about as long as I can remember. Granted, many of those meals have pivoted to quesadillas, but melted cheese and carbs cannot and will not be unseated as the ultimate snack.

The great thing about GC is that, while it’s all about the ingredients, that doesn’t mean that those ingredients have to be top-shelf. I’ve made mine with everything from brie and goat cheese over toasted sourdough to the classic American on white.

There are varied schools of thought as to whether or not other ingredients can be present on your sandwich — but my verdict is that if you’re the one eating it, put whatever you want on there. Just remember: It’s not a grilled cheese without melted cheese an toasted bread.

Quote of the Day

“My father had taught me to be nice first, because you can always be mean later, but once you’ve been mean to someone, they won’t believe the nice anymore. So be nice, be nice, until it’s time to stop being nice, then destroy them.”

Today’s comic was funny, but sad, because I think they used my room for the picture.

I thought the comic was about Doc’s guitar amplifier!

Funny XKCD! Gmail design looks refreshing.

Me too. At least we don’t have to turn ana lights on at 03:00 AM to go do our business.

Gmail is starting to look like Outlook. Proof that conceptual design ends in ultimate functionality, and in the end there is no difference.

The XKCD reminds me of my recent decision to turn the socket off on any device after receiving a recent electricity bill. Thank you, UK sockets, for the physical off switch by every outlet.

That Laurel K Hamilton quote brings back memories… Not read any of the Anita Blake stuff in years.

100% agree with today’s quote. I’ve seen data centers that look like today’s xkcd.

Its about time Gmail got a visual overhaul

I like today’s quote of the day.

I’m interested to use this new Gmail design.

You can’t show grilled cheese without the clip of Gordon Ramsay filling in as Alexa in the Super Bowl ad.
