Robert Noyce , Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove—incorporated a company in Santa Clara, California, that would go on to redefine computing: Intel Corporation.
What began as a bold bet on semiconductor memory quickly evolved into a revolution in microprocessing. Today, we celebrate not just a company, but the birth of modern computing architecture.
The First Building Blocks: Intel 4004
In 1971, Intel released the 4004, the world’s first commercially available microprocessor. Originally designed for calculators, this 4-bit chip packed 2,300 transistors—a marvel at the time—and laid the groundwork for programmable computing.
The Game-Changer: IBM and the 8088
Intel’s real breakthrough came in 1981, when IBM selected the Intel 8088 processor for its first personal computer. That decision didn’t just launch the PC era—it cemented Intel’s dominance in the CPU market for decades.
From Silicon to Servers
Intel’s journey has mirrored the evolution of IT itself:
- From desktop CPUs to data center dominance
- From Moore’s Law to multi-core architectures
- From x86 to AI-optimized silicon
Chances are, if you’ve worked in IT over the past 40 years, you’ve deployed, managed, or troubleshot an Intel-powered system.
