Today in History: 1989 – Grandstand sports newsroom brawl

On the BBC Sports show Grandstand, as presenter Desmond Lynam talked about upcoming events to be covered, such as the Grand National at Aintree and US Masters Golf, a fight broke out behind him in the newsroom. As the fight escalated, Lynam continued to calmly discuss the news, assuring the audience that, “We’ll continue to do our best to cover sport in the way that you like, backed up by our highly professional team.”

The Funnies:

On the Menu Today – Blackberry Fool

I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate than a fruit fool, so here’s the best looking recipe I found.

This recipe is from Jamie Oliver

Ingredients

  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 500 g blackberries
  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 1 lemon
  • 330 ml double cream
  • 200 ml fat-free Greek yoghurt
    Method
  1. Halve the vanilla pod and scrape out the seeds, then place in a large pan along with 350g of the berries, the sugar and lemon juice. Bring to the boil over a medium heat.
  2. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, or until syrupy and the berries are soft but holding their shape. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the cream to form peaks, fold through the yogurt and swirl through a third of the syrup.
  4. Layer the rest of the syrup and cream in dessert glasses, garnish with syrup and fresh berries.

“I sometimes wonder if the manufacturers of foolproof items keep a fool or two on their payroll to test things.”

Love the quote of the day. I think that kind of user testing is essential.

Two sparks on one day?!? What is this madness!

Back in my programming days, I used to work with a guy called Ray, he hated computers and they hated him back, he definitely wasn’t a “fool” but no matter how much I tested my code I could always depend on him to find the bugs I hadn’t! If a program could pass the Ray test I could be confident it was good.

I remember the Grandstand punch up but I was convinced it happened on ITV’s World of Sport behind Dickie Davies!

Three Sparks in one day? You’d be a fool not to read them all.

Also, that office “brawl”, it was more like a massive hug match.

5 Spice ups

I will take all the points! Thank you for 3 Spark!

Mine do that EVERY day…

Generally speaking, I would say they keep them on to design things, not test them

Inspirobot is kind of spot on there!

I love watching televised brawls that happen out of nowhere. Have you ever seen Taiwanese politicians? They’re legit.

Inspirobot not sure which him you are talking about.

It’s impossible to make anything foolproof as fools are so ingenious.

Inspirobot is succinct, but definitely accurate for these Sparks!
