The Funnies:

On the Menu Today - Sausages

I had sausage and chips (cooked in beef dripping) last night and it was lovely. So simple but incredibly satisfying. I don’t know why it’s so good, it just is.

This did get me thinking though about the sheer variety of sausages on offer. Last night I had the standard Richmond thick cut sausages as they’re a favourite of mine, but I’ve really not tried a huge variety in my 28 years. I’ve had those Heck sausages and while they’re nice, they’re gluten free etc, I feel like they’re missing something. Perhaps it’s the gluten ha.

Of course many of us will have had a bratwurst which is always incredible but for us in the UK, not a daily option. What I feel I need to go is go round the corner to the butchers and have some proper sausages. My only reservation is, are they really going to be that much better, especially given they’re going to be more expensive.

Also I feel like I might be slightly weird in this, but if you start throwing gravy all over my sausages I’m not gunna be interested. No sauces or gravy, just some salt and vinegar. Gravy belongs on a roast dinner and maybe a few other things, but not sausage.

Oh and I swear if you put f***ing onion gravy on your sausages you have issues. That stuff is vile.

I’d be interested to hear opinions on favourites or ways of having them, both from within the UK and anywhere abroad. I can imagine there are vast differences!

What about the heavenly combination of sausages and Yorkshire Pudding that is Toad in the Hole? With onion gravy, it’s just amazing… and if you use lamb sausages, you can put mint sauce on it too. Everyone’s a winner!

Onion gravy is good for your digestive system

My girlfriend orders German variations from an online german deli every 2 weeks to stock up because she doesn’t like the type we have over here, or we bring loads back off our frequent visits. As I’m English, bangers and mash is a pure classic, as well as toad in the hole, and I’ll have to disagree with the fact onion gravy is gross, because I love it!

However we usually just have pan fried garlic potatoes or croquet potatoes, red sauerkraut and thuringian rostbratwurst sausage.

Sausage, Chips and Gravy is pretty much my go to at the local chippy. Occasionally I’ll change it up with some mushy peas or curry sauce but mostly gravy. Onion gravy is perfectly acceptable on almost everything.

I’ve found those heck sausages go great in sausage ragu to be fair, but I agree that outside of a sauce they are a bit bland. If you can get a Bookers card or know someone who has access to Bookers then go get some of the catering sausages from them, any variation will do. They are the best I’ve had.

Todays history could do with a link, it’s a bit hard to put in context. That said all the history sections could do with a link to further reading as some of them are quite interesting and occasionally I would like to know more. (I could google it myself of course but I’m lazy)

Inspirobots choice of background picture with that quote is quite disturbing btw…

North me  just not that keen on gravy I guess!

I do love a good sausage…oo-er missus! We used to have a brilliant sausage shop where I lived , back in the day when we had a butchers, that did amazing sausages. I have a few of them as a hangover cure. There was another great sausage shop in Walthamstow Village , but that closed at Christmas.

If you are feeling adventurous and fancy some spice , I recommend O’Hagan’s Satan sausages…they are a bit cheeky , you will physically sweat whilst eating them. I encountered them at the last London Drinker a few years ago.

You need to try Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages as they are really nice.

Inspirobot…either you have had a bit too much of the booze or you’re feeling particularly randy today.

Cumberland sausages are awfully tasty. They’re also massive. I live in Cumbria, could be biased! Cranstons has a spicy cumberland twist, they really are good. The best thing to go in a chip butty with your chips without a doubt.

Just had sausages on the grill last night. Topped it with melted cheese, onions (not gravy), Mustard, and of course… BACON! They were amazing!

Inspirobot: Simmer down there Inspirobot… you’re getting a little out of control again.

History: Good thing we willingly put eavesdropping devices in our homes and offices willingly nowadays.

You lost me at putting vinegar on a sausage. Never tried it but can’t imagine it either.

Do love a good feast

I prefer my sausages in a jar. Preferably in a nice brine, and left on the shelf to age gracefully. You know, like a hot dog.

I love almost any sausage - grilled sausage, sausage with onions and peppers in marinara sauce, breakfast sausage, banger style sausage, the list goes on. I just don’t like them too spicy, and I don’t like breakfast sausage to have the awful maple syrup flavor. Other than that, bring it on.

Inspirobot made me feel slightly uncomfortable, but for some reason I’m not upset about it.

You can put sausage into almost anything and it’ll be good.
